Tim Minchin announces mother's death during Sydney show

Tim Minchin shocked the audience at his recent show in Sydney by revealing that his mother had died.

The British-born Australian comedian and musician shared a series of stories from his life and played several songs during An Unfunny Evening with Tim Minchin at the State Theatre in Australia on Friday.

During one of his stories, the 48-year-old revealed that his mother, Ros, had been diagnosed with terminal blood cancer back in 2020, according to news.com.au.

Towards the end of the show, the Matilda the Musical songwriter returned to the stage for the encore and shocked the crowd by dropping the bombshell.

"My mum died yesterday," he shared, prompting gasps from audience members.

Minchin explained that he felt he must go ahead with the performance despite the tragic loss and then launched into his tune, White Wine in the Sun.

According to the outlet, his voice briefly faltered as he sang, "I'll be seeing my dad, my brother and sisters, my gran and my mum... they'll be drinking white wine in the sun."

Minchin concluded the show by asking the crowd to help him sing Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah.

The singer later acknowledged his mother's death on Instagram on Monday by sharing a photo of Ros laughing for the camera.

In the caption, he simply wrote, "So it goes," followed by three colourful heart emojis.
