The 2020 Venice Film Festival officially kicked off last night – and saw some of cinema's biggest names grace the red carpet for the first time since the coronavirus pandemic began earlier this year.
And, the A-listers did not disappoint in bringing back red-carpet fashion in style with Cate Blanchett championing sustainability in her Esteban Cortázar gown and Tilda Swinton carrying the most beautiful face mask, designed by artist James Merry.
Swinton used the sculptural piece – which Merry said was inspired by stingray skeletons, seaweed, orchids and his favourite fish sculptures on the columns of the Rialto fish market in Venice – to accessorise her black-and-white ruffled Chanel ensemble. The art object was designed especially for Swinton to wear as she picked up her Lifetime Achievement Award at the film festival.
Celebrity stylist Elizabeth Stewart explained on Instagram that the mask was being held as a symbol of "responsibility and care". It is one of the pieces, along with Blanchett's gown, that will be auctioned at Rad at Venice, an event that will raise money for Facing History and UN Women. (You can find out more about that here).
