His character, Leo, has well and truly caused a stir in the second season of Tell Me Lies — which is currently airing — but when accepting the role, actor Thomas Doherty felt a connection to his character that was deeper than most.

'I really saw a lot of my younger self in Leo, for sure,' Doherty told PEOPLE of his character, the new love interest for Lucy (Grace Van Patten).

'I mean, I'm 29 now, Leo's not quite there yet. But I don't know... I guess that young adult, you leave home and you're in college for the first time and you're on your own and you're trying to establish who you are as a person and create this sense of self, but you're thrust into this environment with hundreds and thousands of other people doing the same thing,' he added.

Without spoiling anything, viewers discover the crux of the majority of Leo's problems in the middle of season two. 'You see later on in the series kind of why Leo is the way that Leo is. And I definitely identified a lot with him in that regard — in that storyline for him and wanting to be his own man and be a better person,' Doherty said. 'And I really, really love the desire for kind of self-improvement [Leo has].'

Tell Me Lies tells the story of the toxic relationship between two college students, Lucy (Grace Van Patten) and Stephen (Jackson White). The pair first meet during the first weeks of Lucy's freshman year at the fictional Baird College, with the couple whose relationship eventually becomes a years-long on-again, off-again romance, with each of them cheating on other partners at various points along the way. The series comes with a ready-made fanbase too, having been based on Carola Lovering's bestselling novel of the same name.
