There's some bad news this afternoon for fans of The Crown because Netflix has announced that season five won't air until 2022.

The streaming giant told Deadline that the filming of series five, which sees Imelda Staunton take on the role of Queen Elizabeth II following Olivia Colman's turn in seasons three and four, won't start until June next year.

And, for a change, the delay is nothing to do with the entertainment industry grinding to a halt due to coronavirus. Netflix bosses say the break in filming Peter Jackson's epic royal drama was always planned.

The good news is though that Jackson recently announced series five won't be the last, although there's no word yet on when filming for series six will start and who will star.

'As we started to discuss the storylines for series five, it soon became clear that in order to do justice to the richness and complexity of the story we should go back to the original plan and do six seasons,' he explained in a Twitter statement.

There's also series four of the show to look forward to later this year, when Gillian Anderson will join the cast as Margaret Thatcher and Emma Corrin takes on the role of Princess Diana. Luckily, all episodes were filmed before the UK went into lockdown in March.
