There could soon be a breastfeeding mum emoji

Earlier this year, we reported that there were plans afoot to introduce a whole new set of emojis to better represent women in the workplace *smiley face emoji* And now another female group could soon be getting some on-screen character representation in the form of a breastfeeding mother emoji.

The breastfeeding mum is actually one of the most-requested emojis of the past year and nurses are hoping to make it official to help raise awareness and normalise breastfeeding for new mums and mums-to-be.

The Unicode Consortium (AKA the body that approves all emoji) are planning to meet in November to discuss, amongst other things, the choice of new emojis that could make it onto our smartphones.

Rachel Lee, a nurse from University College London Hospital has officially petitioned the consortium in a bid to get the breastfeeding mother added to the official emoji scroll.

“I just don’t think we are exposed to it enough in society and sometimes we forget how important it is developmentally in all areas to mothers and their babies,” she told the Huffington Post.

Ms Lee explained that the main reason for the introduction of the emoji would be to tackle negative public perception surrounding breastfeeding in public.

“I am under no delusion that creating a small emoji to exist in this society may not be the real push to normalise breastfeeding in public forums. But if it helps just get the message out there by creating discussion and gathering support, then it’s all worth it,” she continued.

If approved, the breastfeeding emoji would be likely to include skin tone variations to make sure all mums are represented.

And it isn’t just breastfeeding mums who are hoping to have some kind of representation in emoji form, according to the voting website Emojipedia other choices to be considered by the consortium include a mermaid, a climber, a coconut, a pie and an almond.

Personally, we can’t wait to put the mermaid emoji into action, just because.
