The September Issue Showdown: Which Celebrities Scored The Year’s Most Coveted Covers?
- 1/10
Vogue: Kendall Jenner
Boasting over 800 pages and a steep $9.99 price tag, Kendall’s Vogue cover is probably the most talked about September issue of the year. The model’s appearance on the fashion bible wasn’t a huge surprise (we’re talking about the model who’s fronted numerous big name campaigns in the past few years, walked for everyone from Chanel to Balmain and part of one of the world’s most famous families) but it didn’t go down well with die-hard fans of the magazine who took to social media to slam the publication for featuring a reality star on their lauded cover. We doubt Kendall cares, though. Scoring the Vogue September cover at the age of 20 is one pretty applaudable win.

British Vogue: Cara Delevingne
British Vogue chose to star a British model: Cara Delevingne. Arguably the most photographed model on British soil since Kate Moss was big, scoring the September issue was a win for Cara - but, like Kendall, not a surprise for the magazine’s readership. After all, Cara is frequently pictured in the magazine and simultaneously promoting her new film ‘Suicide Squad’.

W: Rihanna
RiRi’s bejewelled and post-apocalyptic W cover is definitely a show-stopper. Although, while her elaborate make-up and jewellery is as on point as always, it would’ve been nice to see what the singer was wearing.

Glamour: Bella Hadid
Claiming, “it’s her time”, the American Glamour cover was filled with model-of-the-minute (and Gigi’s baby sister) Bella Hadid. Clad in a red hot 80s ski suit, the win made clear the impact the 19-year-old has had on the fashion industry in the past year or two.
- 5/10
Glamour UK: Chloe Grace Moretz
British Glamour may not have opted to feature a British star on their September issue, but they picked an up-and-comer who’s hitting the headlines over here in the UK at least once a week. She’s dating the firstborn from one of Britain’s most famous families (Brooklyn Beckham, ICYMI) and has made a name for herself for daring to take on the Kardashians in a recent Twitter spat recently. Plus, she’s got some serious red carpet sartorial prowess. A great pick, we say.

Harper’s Bazaar: Kanye West and Kim Kardashian West
Photographed taking selfies and gazing adorably at their mobile phones, this is a cover that we probably could’ve all done without this year - although at least no one could complain that the magazine was attempting to turn the rapper and reality star into high-fashion models. We doubt Harper’s Bazaar fans would’ve been thrilled with that.

Harper’s Bazaar UK: Rosie Huntington-Whiteley
Harper’s Bazaar opted to repeat its September 2015 cover star and booked Rosie Huntington-Whiteley for 2016′s meaty issue. Clad in a glittering Alexander McQueen dress, the Plymouth-born model (who currently resides in LA with her partner Jason Statham) details her move from the world of modelling to the world of business in her accompanying interview.
- 8/10
InStyle: Kerry Washington
Wearing an olive green Victoria Beckham ensemble and velvety lipstick, actress Kerry Washington dominated the InStyle September issue cover. Talking about social change and race, the ‘Scandal’ star’s shoot is accompanied by a fantastic interview making it clear why the magazine selected the 39-year-old, who’s morphed into a fantastic role model for women in recent years.
- 9/10
Vanity Fair: Alicia Vikander
Oscar-winning actress Alicia Vikander has had quite a year, so it’s no wonder that Vanity Fair wanted to snap her up for its September issue. Thanks to ‘The Danish Girl’ and ‘Ex Machina’ she took a leap towards stardom and even managed to fall in love with her ‘The Light Between Oceans’ co-star Michael Fassbender. Plus, she’s a Louis Vuitton muse. The sky’s quite clearly the limit for the 27-year-old star - something which Alicia’s Vanity Fair clearly wanted to highlight.

Elle: Cara Delevingne
There’s no stopping Cara. The 24-year-old also scored the Elle September cover - and looked a whole lot more glam than she did on the British Vogue one.
Scoring a September issue cover is a big deal - after all, it is the biggest magazine each fashion publication produces annually. So, you can understand Kendall Jenner’s excitement at shooting her very first Vogue cover this year.
But it’s not only Kendall who’s got something to shout about this month. Kim and Kanye won the Harper’s Bazaar cover, ‘Scandal’ star Kerry Washington took InStyle and Bella Hadid fronted Glamour’s American Women Now issue - no small feat.
Above, Kendall, Kimye, Kerry And Bella’s covers decoded, alongside all of the other September 2016 issues.
