Even if you are not a fan of the classic children’s story – The Gruffalo – written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler you will fall in love with the new Gruffalo River Ride, at Chessington World of Adventures in Surrey.

Based closely on the original story, the Ride (launched on March 18) takes you on a vivid trip in a round-tub like riverboat to meet the mouse, fox, owl and of course the Gruffalo.

My five-year old son loved it so much he went on the Ride four times, followed by a copious number of Gruffalo bites – starting at £3.95.

We went rather hungrily to eat our Gruffalo crumble (frozen yoghurt, chocolate sauce, chocolate bits).

It is advisable to do eat the Gruffalo bites afterwards – to avoid any nasty surprises in the riverboat!

There is also a new Gruffalo shop where you can buy your favourite Gruffalo merchandise: from toys, books, key-rings, t-shirts.

If you want the whole Gruffalo experience you can stay in a Gruffalo-themed room – perfect for a short Easter break – complete with ‘deep dark wood’ scenes straight from the book – and murals of the furry beast!

However, we stayed in a family room in the Azteca hotel – complete with two-jungle themed bunk beds. Much fun was had in the lift on our way to the room – which came alive to the sound of monkey noises when you pressed the lift button!
