The best warm blankets for winter, according to our editors

These throws from Walmart, Pendleton, Eddie Bauer and beyond are cute and cozy — plus they start at just $15!

The Cozy Earth Bubble Blanket is shown layered over a chair for Yahoo's guide to the best throw blankets.
The best throw blankets warm up any space — literally and figuratively. And many are on sale right now! (Cozy Earth)

Maybe it's because I'm a longtime home writer, but I truly believe you can never have too many throw blankets. They add instant coziness, whether they're laid across a sofa or the foot of a bed. They're essential for movie nights, winter snuggling and ensuring guests stay comfy when you're hosting.

In my experience, the best throw blankets are plush but also durable — because you want to keep them around for a while, don't you?! Bonus points if they happen to be practical (read: machine-washable) and affordable. My fellow editors agree: When I asked them for their favorite warm throw blankets, they included plenty of under-$50 finds, including one beauty that's a mere $15 right now.

Whether your blanket stock is in need of replenishing or you're just due for an upgrade, we have you covered. For more tips on creating a warm, welcoming abode, read our stories on how to cozy up your home, how to eliminate cold drafts and how to clean your fireplace.

For the look of fur with a trendy twist, try a ruched blanket! This top-rated, reversible throw from Walmart's line with Better Homes & Gardens comes in 11 colors and is machine-washable.

"I was intrigued by this blanket because it was being compared to a much more expensive blanket from Pottery Barn on social media," says Senior Deals Writer Britt Ross of the budget-friendly pick. "I was super impressed when it arrived because it feels so much more luxe than a $25 throw should. It's got some weight to it, is remarkably soft and keeps me toasty on chilly winter nights. I'm not usually a fan of the faux fur aesthetic, but the one I have — the light tan and white style — is understated enough that it doesn't feel too showy."

Speaking of luxury, it doesn't get much more lavish than Cozy Earth's coveted Bubble Cuddle Blanket, which is stitched with thick, bubble-like ripples that will make you feel like you're floating on a giant marshmallow.

I managed to nab one of these around the holidays (when it kept selling out) and, while it's a splurge, I can say it has proven a worthy investment: The throw keeps me warm during cold Brooklyn nights and never ceases to get compliments from guests.

It comes in three colors and two sizes — and last time I checked was on sale for $50 off.

For a reversible, medium-weight throw with bold appeal, don't sleep on this popular blanket from Eddie Bauer (or do!). It's beloved by Yahoo readers for its oversize check pattern, practicality (it's machine-washable) and cozy-yet-breathable coverage (our editors love it, too).

I've personally given this blanket as a gift and keep a few on hand for impromptu road or camping trips and cold-weather emergencies. They're perfect for using outside when you're sitting around a heat lamp or fire pit, as long as you're careful.

At only $15 and available in a range of colors, it's worth stocking up on for when company comes around.

This heated blanket offers the look — and feel! — of two blankets in one, with a short fur on one side and sherpa on the other.

"I am so pleasantly surprised by this blanket," says Senior Home and Garden Editor Jessica Dodell-Feder. "The electric warming works well and evenly (which isn't always the case with these types of blankets), and it has held up even though I have a dog who is obsessed with it. It's just the right size for one person — or one person with a Velcro lap dog."

You can choose from six heat levels and toss the blanket in the washing machine when it needs a refresh. For safety, it features auto-shutoff and heat protection.

If you're looking for something that's lighter than faux fur and strikes a good balance between casual and decadent, consider a teddy blanket.

"I initially purchased this blanket for looks alone. I'm a sucker for anything teddy and it was on sale so I couldn't resist," shares Shopping Director Jeanine Edwards. "Turns out, it's one of the best buys for my home I've ever made. I was only intending to use it as decor, but it's actually been very functional for keeping me warm in rooms where there's a draft. So it looks great and it serves a purpose — win, win!"

Right now you can scoop up this top-rated, machine-washable throw for 46% off. Add to cart and don't look back!

Planning on sharing? This soft, oversized blanket from The Big One makes room for snuggling.

Senior Commerce Editor Rory Halperin bought one years ago during a Black Friday sale and has been so impressed with the size and quality that she's purchased several since. "It's so cozy, and you can often find me wrapped up in it on my couch!" she exclaims. "Kohl's always has new colors and patterns depending on season. It makes a great present, too, and I've gifted it to friends and family many times over the years."

Last time we checked, the mid-weight, machine-washable blanket was available for only $15, and in 38 different patterns and hues. Grab a different one for each room!

Cozy meets breezy in this striped blanket from Barefoot Dreams, which is known for its mid-weight, washable and — most importantly — ultra-soft textiles that feel like heaven on the skin.

Intrigued by the hype, Deputy Editor Izabella Zaydenberg finally got her hands on one and has since become quite the brand enthusiast: "They come in so many colors, they're insanely soft and they make excellent gifts — I practically buy them in bulk around Christmas. I have three in my home at the moment — one on my reading chair, one on the couch and one on the bed (which my cat has quickly claimed as her own)."

I personally own and love the Barefoot Dreams CozyChic Ribbed Throw. It's another highly giftable style — and it happens to be on sale for $50 off.

Want to brighten things up a bit? Look no further than this very vibrant throw from Pendleton.

"If you've ever dreamed of owning a Pendleton blanket but have balked at the price, this is your chance," says Dodell-Feder. "This fleece blanket features one of the brand's signature patterns, but costs literally a fraction of their wool throws. I bought mine for the foot of my bed, where my dog likes to snuggle up, because it's super soft and machine-washable. I love the cabin-y look it gives my bedroom!"

Its light(ish) weight make this blanket great for toting, layering and seasonal transitioning. Hot tip: Throw one in your trunk for picnics or outdoor sports games.

Better yet, make it a party with this throw from the aptly named company Big Blanket.

"I initially tried it for the novelty, but immediately fell in love with it," says AOL Commerce Editor Kate Ellsworth. "It's ridiculously large, fitting over multiple couches and draping over my king-sized bed. We use it for snuggling during the fall and winter or as an extra comforter. It's sooooo warm and cozy, and it's held up perfectly over the past five-plus years. We've taken it traveling, moved it across state lines and used it as a play rug for our daughter. We love this blanket so much that we've purchased a lot of other stuff from the brand — the Sherpa blanket (which is a winter must and deserves its own essay), the bedding (sheets, duvet, and comforter), and two Hideout Hoodies. I recommend the Big Blanket to anyone who will listen to me. It's the best thing I've ever tested or purchased."

Ellsworth notes that the blanket is fairly heavy, ideal for those who prefer something between a regular and weighted blanket and on the pricier side (but last time we checked, it was on sale).

This blanket from ChappyWrap is another pick that's equal parts cozy and breezy, with a touch of whimsy!

"I've washed mine a number of times, and it still looks like new!" gushes Gifting Editor Amanda Garrity of her floral throw. "The brand claims it's resistant to shrinking, pilling and fuzz and so far, I've found that to be the case."

The brand's patterns are so striking, the blankets could moonlight as stylish wraps for warming up at the park or other outdoor outings. ChappyWrap also offers a slightly smaller midi size that's great for kids, as well as a mini for babies — plus monogram options.

Another faux fur throw, this pick from West Elm will make you feel like you're at a high-end ski resort.

"It's pricey, but it's one of the best home purchases I've ever made," says Trending Writer Sarah Weldon. "It's heavy, but not as heavy as an actual weighted blanket. I've taken the best naps of my life with it, both alone and sharing it with my very tall fiancé — and I have the smaller size! It's so luxurious to the touch and looks super fancy on our couch. The cost per use is basically $0." (Read Weldon's full review.)

I used to work for Williams-Sonoma, Inc. (West Elm's mother company), so I can attest to this ombre blanket's popularity — and, after splurging on it and the matching pillow covers for my own apartment, its beauty and durability. Did I mention the throw is currently on sale for 45% off?

For a blanket that you can truly immerse yourself in, nothing beats this wearable option, says Executive Editor Nicole Sforza.

"One of my daughters got it for my other daughter for Christmas and I promptly stole it," she explains. "It's wildly roomy and so soft, with a big pocket in the front to keep your hands warm or to store snacks (important!). I've fallen asleep wearing this thing numerous times."

Nicole caveats that, while this wearable blanket is noted as reversible in the product listing, there are tags and seams on the inside. But hey, it comes in endless pattern and color options!
