The wait is over – we finally know the full cohort of track and field athletes who will be representing GB at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games this summer.

The squad comprises current and former world, European and Commonwealth champions and Olympic medallists, as well as rising stars who showcased their potential at the UK Athletics Championships last weekend, which doubled as the Olympic trials.

Leading GB’s gold medal hopes are world champions Josh Kerr and Katrina Johnson-Thompson, as well as Olympic, World and European medallist Keely Hodgkinson.

Most athletes had to achieve the Olympic qualifying standard for their event and achieve a top-two finish at last weekend’s trials to secure their spot, except for world medallists who were guaranteed a place on the team if they met the qualifying standard.

Dina Asher-Smith, Daryll Neita, Ben Pattison and Matthew Hudson-Smith were among the well-known Team GB stars to bag themselves a coveted place last weekend, while newcomers securing their debut Olympic qualification included 17-year-old Phoebe Gill, who claimed 800m victory over Jemma Reekie, and 21-year-old sprinter Louie Hinchliffe, who has shot to prominence this year under renowned coach Carl Lewis.

Georgia Bell is also among the 35 Olympic debutants who have made the team, having made a remarkable return to running in the last few years while still holding down a full-time job.

Despite grappling with injury in recent years, and missing the trials in Manchester on account of a minor calf injury, 2022 1500m World Champ Jake Wightman has secured a spot – but contesting the 800m – as has Eilish McColgan, who also missed the trials and has recently returned from long-term injury.

But while there's jubilation for many, athletes including 800m runner Elliot Giles endure disappointment after missing out on selection.

For Giles in particular, the news will be particularly tough to take; the 30-year-old fell with 50m to go in the 800m final last weekend, meaning he missed out on a top-two position which would have secured him qualification. It means he's edged out of contesting the 800m by Wightman, who was granted a medical exemption from the trials due to his injury.

Although World Athletics permits qualification for athletes through world rankings if they meet its entry standard, UKA's policy is such that it will only consider invitations based on world rankings if its own qualifying standard is met.

UKA stated that the aim of this selection policy is to maximise medals and top-eight finishes.

UKA's Olympic Head Coach Paula Dunn, said:

'Congratulations to all the athletes and their support networks on their selection for Paris 2024. It is a huge moment in their careers, and they have all worked incredibly hard to get into this position. I wish all the selected athletes well in their last few weeks of preparation and we will continue to ensure that they can optimise and maximise all the support required leading into Paris.

'It’s a brilliant mix of athletes who have multiple global medals alongside some amazing young talent that has only just broken through this season. We saw a number of athletes step up at this weekend’s Microplus UK Athletics Championships with some exceptional performances across the board to get those standards.

'We know from this we have a high quality team for Paris next month who know how to produce their best when it counts and will be challenging for medals and those Olympic final spots. It’s an exciting time for everyone, and we’re incredibly proud of the team named today.'
