Every closet could use an easy, but stylish, outfit recipe — one you can turn to when uninspired. It’s the equivalent of keeping your freezer stocked with a frozen meal (or two) from Trader Joes; it’ll take five minutes and hit every single time. For some, including Lana Condor and Hailey Bieber, that outfit formula is an elevated matching set that requires no additional styling. For others like Selena Gomez, it’s a combination of timeless and trendy pieces that result in an uber chic look, a formula that Taylor Swift recently made her own, too.
When out in New York City with Blake Lively, the two kind of twinned with their long, beachy waves and trendy mini skirts. But while Lively went a little more bold with her look — vibrant colors, patchwork denim, and tweed — Swift kept it really simple and remarkably elegant. The singer-songwriter wore a classic black cardigan, pleated mini skirt, and a timeless pair of block-heeled riding boots.

The three-part outfit was the reminder I needed that some of fall’s best looks rely on the basics we already have in our closet. Swift’s black cardigan is an easy knit that most of us already own and can easily be dressed up or down. But rather than going fully casual, she took a page from Gomez’s book and elevated the wardrobe staple with the mini skirt and heeled shoes.
Mini skirts have been a go-to “It” piece over the last two years, worn by everyone from Julia Roberts to Rihanna. And though the style often leans sexy (or can be so micro it’s impractical), Swift masterfully showed how to make it more refined; her gray, uniform-esque version of trending style took it from sexy to sophisticated. Plus, the heeled riding boots minimized the leg reveal and balanced the trendy nature of the skirt with a touch of timelessness. They also brought the entire look into fall, making the formula a must-have this season.
