Tamzin Outhwaite has opened up about how the perimenopause has changed her relationship with alcohol.

The actress and presenter, 51, revealed that she has quit drinking after her "resistance" changed.

Speaking to The Mirror, the TV star explained: "When I started perimenopause I’d have two glasses and be on the floor.

"My resistance has completely changed and I don’t really enjoy it any more. It’s not serving me very well, so I’ve just decided to stop."

Outhwaite had her final drink in August at a festival, and has already experienced benefits from cutting out alcohol.

The mother-of-two explained: "When you don’t drink you don’t have so many ups and downs mood-wise. I prefer my physicality and I’m getting a lot done.

"I’m doing more exercise, not eating rubbish food the day after and when I’m seeing friends we’re getting a coffee or having a swim and a walk."

She added that she hasn't "missed it for one moment", and would be "happy" if she can continue until Christmas.

The perimenopause is caused by hormonal changes that every woman will experience at some point in their life – usually beginning around the age of 45 years old, according to the NHS.

There is some evidence that alcohol can worsen symptoms, including sleep disturbance, hot flushes and mood swings.

Outhwaite also shared the other steps she is taking to manage changes, including daily supplements and a "small dose" of HRT.

Additionally, she has adopted meditation, yoga and breathwork which helps "keep me calm".

It comes after Davina McCall this week revealed her surprising first perimenopause symptoms after experiencing "overnight" changes.

The presenter, 55, noticed her hair and legs suddenly becoming very dry, as well as "frightening" forgetfulness.
