New Tai-Chi for Arthritis program to start May 10 at Lewisburg YMCA
Apr. 30—LEWISBURG — The Lewisburg YMCA, in cooperation with the Union/Snyder Area Agency on Aging, will offer a Tai Chi for Arthritis program to local residents age 60 and up free of charge, thanks to funds made available by the Pennsylvania Department of Aging.
Tai Chi for Arthritis will run 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Fridays from May 10 to June 28. Class size is limited to 15 people and registration is required at gsvymca.org or at the Lewisburg YMCA front desk.
Tai Chi for Arthritis has been shown to improve movement, balance, strength, flexibility, and relaxation, as well as decrease pain and falls. The program is open to those with or without arthritis, rheumatic diseases or related musculoskeletal conditions. Exercises are appropriate for people with mild, moderate, and severe joint involvement and back pain. Multiple levels of work can be adapted to each participant, including a seated version.
The program will be delivered by the Tai Chi for Health Institute and led by certified instructor Michael LaBant. LaBant, a 30-year practitioner, is a high-level certified instructor with the National Qigong Association, a master trainer with the American Tai & Qigong Association, and a practice leader with the Institute of Integral Qigong and Tai Chi.
