Sydney Sweeney wears Angelina Jolie's 2004 Academy Awards gown two decades later
Sydney Sweeney stepped out in a piece of red-carpet history last night, attending the 2024 Oscars after-party wearing a dress previously seen on Angelina Jolie.
Jolie originally wore the gown, which was created by the American designer Marc Bouwer, to the Academy Awards back in 2004. The elegant white dress features delicate ruching around the waist, a plunging neckline and an entirely cut-away back.
Exactly two decades later, Sweeney breathed new life into the archival style. Working with her stylist Molly Dickinson, the Euphoria star chose to accessorise in a similar way to Jolie, with the matching white sash and layered necklaces by Messika (a custom design created specially for Sweeney). Dickinson took to Instagram to thank Marc Bouwer and the brand's president Paul Margolin for the dress, writing: "Thank you so much Marc + @paulmargolin for letting us into your archives for this special moment!"
The point of difference was the glam; while Jolie originally opted for a sleek half-up, half-down hairstyle, Sweeney chose the occasion to debut a voluminous new bob – which added some additional Marilyn Monroe-inspired bombshell glamour to the look.
Sweeney wasn't the only star to opt for a vintage find on Oscars night. Jennifer Lawrence arrived at the after-party wearing an archival Givenchy dress from the autumn/winter 1996 collection by John Galliano, while Carey Mulligan walked the red carpet at the Oscars ceremony wearing a recreation of a Balenciaga gown from the 1950s.
