We're well used to seeing the return of styles from decades gone by when it comes to fashion — in fact, most trends rely on taking inspiration from the past — but the boot style we didn't expect to see walking the streets in 2025 is one pulled straight from the 19th century.

And yet, the lace-up heeled boot seems to be on the cusp of a big return. Lately, the elegant yet sultry style has become embraced by celebrities, and it's Jimmy Choo's Scarlett ankle boot 95 that has been garnering favour, with Sydney Sweeney stepping out in a pair in New York earlier this week.

The actress was photographed walking through the city in less than favourable weather conditions, but that didn't prevent her from slipping into a sleek all-black ensemble, where her lace-up Jimmy Choo boots proved to be the main event. She layered up a black fringed scarf dress with a wool coat, sheer black tights and square sunglasses, matching the black leather finish of her ankle boots to her top-handle Poppy bag from Oscar de la Renta.

Reminiscent of the iconic French Cancan style depicted in Baz Luhrman's Moulin Rouge – and those seen in the real-life stage version, too – these boots feature the brand's signature drop heel in a thin stiletto style, with a slim pointed toe and lace-up corset design which cuts slightly above the ankle. At the moment, Jimmy Choo offers the boots in a black and vivid postbox-red colour-way.

While this Victorian-era style might be footwear marmite, it's already growing in popularity among the A-list. Lady Gaga was seen in pair of the Scarlett boots this week, pairing hers with a tailored black wool coat by Willy Chavarria for an outing in New York. Staying true to the "three's a trend" adage, perennial fashion muse Chloë Sevigny also wore the style last week while hosting a dinner celebrating the brand's spring/summer 2025 campaign in New York.

We'll be keeping an eye on Nicole Kidman to see if she reprises her Satine wardrobe and gives the Moulin Rouge style her seal of approval.
