Sweet paper Christmas decoration ideas to try this year
Christmas is a time for cosy clothes, cups of hot cocoa, and lots of crafting! We can't think of a better way to spend a winter weekend than with Christmas tunes playing, a hot chocolate in hand and all of the craft supplies pulled out ready for some serious crafting.
Paper is one of the first crafting materials that we're all introduced to as children, whether it's learning how to cut and stick shapes, getting messy with papier mache or folding fans, paper is a crafting medium with endless uses. And it's not just for kids to play with, there are lots of papercrafts for adults to enjoy such as decoupage, origami and papercutting.
What better way to decorate your home this year than by making Christmas decorations in paper? Not only is it a nice budget-friendly way to craft, but it's also much more eco-friendly and sustainable!
There's no previous crafting experience needed to make some beautiful decorations with paper – just some pretty printed card and a glue stick is all you need to get started!
We've rounded up a selection of the most creative papercraft Christmas projects for you to try. Whether you're looking for a quick and easy project to do with the kids or something to get stuck into and destress with at the weekend, we've got a paper project to suit everyone!
Quilling paper snowflakes
If you're looking for a new paper craft to try, take a look at paper quilling. Paper quilling uses long strips of paper rolled and folded into shapes to make intricate patterns and designs. The shapes made with paper quilling really lend themselves to snowflake designs, as Instagram crafter @thebeehivedesign expertly demonstrated.
Once your quilled design is stuck together, you can give it another light coat of glue to help seal it and give it a bit more strength. This is also an ideal time to add a sprinkling of glitter if you're making some festive tree decorations!
Perfect paper wreath
Did you know that you can make a wreath out of paper? This beautiful one from @jackie_b_o on Instagram is simply gorgeous! It's perfect to add a Scandi touch to your Christmas decorations, and such a meditative craft to work on.
Paper cut houses
Adding a Christmas village display when decorating for the season is a fun way to add a bit of winter magic to your home. We love this papercut house design shared by @ogcraftsdesign on Pinterest, there are so many ways you can add your own flair to the idea to fit in with your design aesthetic.
You could make houses out of kraft paper or card and decorate them with paint pens to look like a gingerbread house village. Or make the houses out of thick card with tracing or baking paper covering the cutouts so that you can add an LED tealight candle to light it up at night.
Concertina Christmas angels
If you want a fun Christmas craft for the kids to get involved with, why not teach them how to make paper fan Christmas angels! This DIY shared by @oceanchildcrafts on Pinterest is quick and easy to do, all you need is some paper, string, glue and a wooden bead.
Get the kids to decorate the paper with lots of different colours and patterns before you fold it. If you want to dress your angels up a bit more, use a pen to add a face and offcuts of yarn to make hair.
Giant paper poinsettia
Poinsettias are the classic Christmas flower that seem to be impossible to keep alive. If you want to decorate your home with festive blooms without worrying about having to water them, these giant paper poinsettia flowers are an ideal alternative.
This wonderful display was shared on Pinterest by @ogcraftsdesign, and we think it's stunning. Plus, the clever idea of having it attached directly to the wall is a great way to decorate the room without taking up precious space!
If you want to create some oversized flowers and foliage for your home this Christmas, you might want to consider using a Cricut machine to help with the cutting. There are lots of templates available online for hand cutting paper flowers, but there are also lots of SVG files that can be used with a cutting machine that can help speed up the process.
Crepe paper Christmas trees
If you like modern and simple Christmas decorations, you'll love this beautiful crepe paper Christmas tree idea shared by @søstrenegrenes on Pinterest.
Make the project a bit easier on your hands by folding your crepe paper a few times to cut multiple petal shapes at once. To get a fuller appearance, layer your paper petals closer together and give the end a slight roll between your fingers to make it stick out a bit more.
Modern accordion paper trees
If your style is more colourful and modern, you'll love these statement accordion paper trees shared by Pinterest user @fempocalypse. We think they'd look fabulous as a mini paper forest, all made in different sizes and colours and grouped on a windowsill, mantlepiece, or even used as a centrepiece for your Christmas table.
Scandi style stars
If you do most of your Christmas shopping online, you'll probably have stacks of cardboard to dispose of; why not recycle some of it into tree decorations? This fab DIY was shared on Pinterest by @crazycraftlady.
We love the simplistic Scandi style look you can get from decorating plain cardboard stars with designs in white pen – it reminds us of gingerbread cookies! White gel pens are great for doing fine details on designs like this, but if you want something a bit bolder, try a paint marker pen.
Paper honeycomb decorations
Looking for a paper decoration DIY that can suit all kinds of style and colour schemes – Instagram paper crafter @_sarah_matthews has just the thing! She shared her take on honeycomb paper decorations made in lovely jewel-toned card that give off a very vintage feel.
This style of decoration is made by folding and glueing multiple layers of the same symmetrical shape together to make a 3D ornament. While the shape has to stay the same for each piece, you can go as crazy as you want with the colour choice - add patterned, glitter or even metallic card to your design to make something truly unique.
