Sunday with Jo Malone: ‘I’m always wearing four or five different fragrances’
Up early? I’m not the earliest of risers, but I live in Dubai and can walk to the beach for sunrise at 6.30am. Other than people, I miss nothing about home – my husband Gary and I feel as if we’re living our senior gap year.
Sunday breakfast? A green juice and a red juice but, if I’m hungover, it’s eggs Benedict.
Sunday workout? When it’s really hot, they ice the pool here and I’ve created my own little water workout. Running machines make me dizzy, so I manage to sort of run in the pool for 45 minutes with a pilates band.
Do you cook? I do a big Sunday lunch and invite anyone who’s just moved to Dubai, so they’re not on their own. We arrived not knowing anybody, with no business here, and now we have 13 projects on the go and a group of friends who are like family. Nobody is threatened by anyone else’s success.
Sunday games? We are known as the ‘Rummikub couple’, because wherever we go, we’ve always got our Rummikub on us.
Sunday shopping? There’s an area of Dubai called Satwa which has hundreds of tailors. There’s an amazing shop with incredible buttons, zips and tassels. I’ll find some material in the silk shop and get something made for the equivalent of £20.
Sunday relaxation? My mind never stops. Sometimes a conversation is going on but my mind has wandered off. I love a nap though. I have a breathing tape that takes me from 18 breaths a minute to seven. Then I’ll sleep for 20 minutes, but it’ll feel like an hour.
Sunday scents? I’m always wearing four or five different fragrances. I have room sprays everywhere and we have a huge bath, so I’ll put something in there and light a candle.
