If you were to picture an Instagram image of Montauk, you would probably conjure the Hero Beach Club: whitewashed shiplap walls, surfboards resting in corners like colorful sculptures; bright, light-filled rooms punctuated by rattan chairs you want to sink into; luxurious white linen embroidered with delicate sweet nothings; and an unspoiled view of the sun as it sets on the horizon.

Surrounded by wind-blown dunes and Montauk’s moon-shaped beach, Hero Beach Club is a rare portal to tranquility in a town synonymous with late-night parties. The 30-room hotel, offset by the backdrop of the wild Atlantic ocean, is nothing short of serene as you enter the lobby, greeted by fresh salty air, soothing tropical music.

Designed by Curious Yellow, what was originally an unassuming 1950's motel (formerly the Oceanside hotel), was brought back to life last year thanks to Jon Krasner of Salt Box and Shagwong fame, who renovated the property with a clean, modern design aesthetic, adding custom teak and rattan furniture from Bali, copper lighting, handwoven textiles, printed tiles, and bedding by Hill House Home.

Billed as an eco luxury respite for city folk looking to relax and recharge, the beachfront hotel (which also features a pool) offers a concierge program that can arrange everything from surf lessons, fishing, biking, horseback riding and hiking, to massages and beachside clambakes.

And just beyond the lush private garden, you’ll find the hotel’s own private entrance onto the beach, where, much like the beach clubs of Europe, there are beach loungers, towels, and umbrellas waiting for you.

Most rooms have a private patio or balcony with floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors. After sipping rosé on the large day beds, we fell asleep listening to the waves crash on the shore as the rest of Montauk, though only a short 10-minute walk from the hotel, felt an entire universe away.
