Since Succession’s third season came to its sinister, nail-biting conclusion early last year, voyeurs of the Roy family drama have been eagerly holding their breath to find out what lies ahead for Logan and his roost of potential heirs.

A week after season three premiered, HBO confirmed that a fourth was already in the works – and in June, it was confirmed production had begun. Here’s what we know so far.

When does season four come out?

It has been announced that the Roys would return to our screens on 26 March, with a new episode dropping each week.

This means that the series lands in time to qualify for the forthcoming Emmy Awards – and after scooping up the most Emmy nominations in 2022 for season three, winning the accolades for best drama and writing for a drama series, as well as best supporting actor via Matthew Macfadyen (aka Tom) – you can bet more are coming.

What will it be about?

An official synopsis for the 10 episodes was released by HBO. It read:

“In the ten-episode season four, the sale of media conglomerate Waystar Royco to tech visionary Lukas Matsson moves ever closer. The prospect of this seismic sale provokes existential angst and familial division among the Roys as they anticipate what their lives will look like once the deal is completed. A power struggle ensues as the family weighs up a future where their cultural and political weight is severely curtailed.”

In a red-carpet interview from last year’s Emmy Awards, Sarah Snook told NBC that for its fourth season, Succession fans can expect “More drama. What else can the Roys provide? [And] super-high stakes.”

The show’s creator Jesse Armstrong has confirmed that some of the scenes have been filmed overseas – but didn’t address the rumours that shooting also took place in Norway.

Is there a trailer?

Along with the premiere date, fans were given a small glimpse of what’s to come in season four of Succession, with a minute-and-a-half-long trailer showing rising tensions between the united Roy siblings and their father Logan. Shiv is heard straight-forwardly stating: “This is not about getting back at Dad – but if it hurts him, it doesn’t bother me.” We also see Gerri telling her, Roman and Kendall, “You cannot win, your dad will wash you away”; and Tom broaches the subject of the familial feud with Cousin Greg, saying, “Like Israel-Palestine, Greg, only harder. And much more important.”

Who will join the cast?

Joining Brian Cox (Logan Roy), Jeremy Strong (Kendall), Sarah Snook (Shiv), Kieran Culkin (Roman), Alan Ruck (Connor), Matthew Macfadyen (Tom), and Nicholas Braun (Cousin Greg), you can expect to see a majority of the rest of the cast returning – including J Smith Cameron (Gerri), Peter Friedman (Frank), Hiam Abbass (Marcia) and Justine Lupe (Willa).

Alexander Skarsgard will also reportedly reprise his role as Lukas Mattson and Annabelle Dexter-Jones will be back as Kendall’s love interest Naomi Pierce.

Can we expect a fifth season?

The big question that lingers is how many more seasons will follow. Jesse Armstrong told Variety that he already has a plan for the series finale in mind, but he won’t reveal how many seasons he will make. “All I know is there’s a promise in the Succession title, and it can’t go on forever,” he said.
