Though it may not feel like it amid this month's "atmospheric rivers," warm, sunny days are indeed ahead. And with Fall 2023 shows wrapped, it's time to get excited for the summer season between now and then. And what better way than with a new, on-trend swimsuit or two?

When it comes to bathing suits, there's lots to consider, in addition to comfort: Thanks to innovative strides in the industry, there are more sustainably-made and inclusive options to shop than ever. And with travel and climate change making beach and pool excursions more of a year-round activity, new brands and collections are everywhere.

Ruffled Swimsuits

According to data collected by Klarna, sales for ruffled bathing suits are up 18% since the beginning of the year. A hyper-femme aesthetic materializes in a variety of ways, from frilled trims and shoulder straps to tiered hip accents. Any suit that combines dainty ruffles with the next two trends gets extra brownie points.

Rosette Swimsuits

This year, rosettes have infiltrated everything from our wardrobes to our jewelry boxes, so it's no surprise some of the hottest designers are incorporating them into swim. While not new, 3-D florals may be the most covet-able detail of the spring and summer seasons, as proven by Magda Butrym, Maygel Coronel (both long known for their recognizable floral appliqués) and Los Angeles-based Same Swimwear, whose latest collection we're calling it the 'it' swimwear capsule of the year.

Bow-Embellished Swimsuits

Coquettes, rejoice! This year's most popular accessory — ribbons — is here to stay, even in swim. Bow-embellished swimsuits tie into a range of trends, and a throng of beloved swim brands have hopped on board. Sustainably-minded Londre debuts a unitard one-piece; Giambattista Valli caters to the lingerie-as-outerwear trend with a satin bow and ruffled cutouts; Blackbough's recent Ballerina Collection was an instant success.

Crochet-Knit Swimsuits

Perhaps thanks to the '70s-set "Daisy Jones & the Six," bohemian notes are seeing a redux, as heaps of crochet emerge once temperatures rise. Soft, sweet and timeless, these hand-crafted pieces from designers like Nia Thomas, Shondel and Lisa Maree — each of which crafts equally sumptuous ready-to-wear to accompany its swim — fit the bill. For festival season, we strongly suggest a co-ord set with matching bottoms, like a pant or skirt, as well as open-knit dresses for an effortless look.

Sales for black bathing suits are up 71% compared to last year, according to Klarna. Basic but not boring, a no-fuss black one-piece is as ideal for water sports as it is for selfies. Shoppers have more than doubled their interest in floral bathing suits, with Klarna reporting that purchases for these styles are up 104% since the beginning of 2023. Insta-favorite brands like Frankies Bikinis and Heavy Manners elevate traditional budding prints with embroidered blooms and vintage-inspired silhouettes. Double down on the look with a cute pareo skirt set.

Triangle Bikini Swimsuits

Barely-there garments obviously tend to skyrocket come the dog days of summer, but itty-bitty tops were sprinkled throughout Fall 2023 runways as well, signaling a macro trend for the year — proven by a 30% rise in triangle bikini sales recently, per Klarna. The evergreen silhouette is a great gateway to dip your toe into more out-there trends as well, like a metallic finish (metallic swimsuits are also up 25% from last year). When in doubt, stick to perfected simplicity, such as Year of Ours' new ribbed-knit triangle top or Slate's non-tie rendition with adjustable straps.

Ruched swimsuits will survive any trend cycle, but 2023 is showcasing more tonal hues in this category than we've seen previously.
