Have Insiders Been Selling United Rentals, Inc. (NYSE:URI) Shares?

It is not uncommon to see companies perform well in the years after insiders buy shares. Unfortunately, there are also plenty of examples of share prices declining precipitously after insiders have sold shares. So before you buy or sell United Rentals, Inc. (NYSE:URI), you may well want to know whether insiders have been buying or selling.

Do Insider Transactions Matter?

Most investors know that it is quite permissible for company leaders, such as directors of the board, to buy and sell stock in the company. However, such insiders must disclose their trading activities, and not trade on inside information.

Insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing. But it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing. For example, a Columbia University study found that 'insiders are more likely to engage in open market purchases of their own company’s stock when the firm is about to reveal new agreements with customers and suppliers'.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At United Rentals

The Non-Executive Chairman, Michael Kneeland, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$4.0m worth of shares at a price of US$133 each. So what is clear is that an insider saw fit to sell at around the current price of US$117. We generally don't like to see insider selling, but the lower the sale price, the more it concerns us. Given that the sale took place at around current prices, it makes us a little cautious but is hardly a major concern.

Happily, we note that in the last year insiders paid US$1.0m for 8837 shares. But insiders sold 52438 shares worth US$6.8m. Over the last year we saw more insider selling of United Rentals shares, than buying. The chart below shows insider transactions (by individuals) over the last year.
