Airbnb host shares unusual things people leave behind after their stay — from expensive liquor to designer purses
Airbnb hosting has become a booming business — in 2022, Statista reported that the worldwide revenue for the company was $8.4 billion.
Airbnbs are popular in comparison to hotels because they can offer larger, more luxurious or more personal accommodations. But like hotels, guests may still forget to collect and take home all of their belongings after their stay.
Miami, Fla. Airbnb host Giullianna (@atouchofclass_miami) has been sharing some of the surprising things that guests have left at her properties. Her series on what her guests have left behind has become popular on TikTok as followers are fascinated to get a peek into what goes on behind closed doors.
“Is it weird I’m so nosy I love seeing what other people thought were necessary for a few day airbnb stay,” said one commenter, @cassdamm.
What are some things people leave behind at Airbnbs?
Food and alcohol are popular left-behind items, and while some commenters expressed shock over leaving any amount of groceries behind, others pointed out that it could be hard for people who traveled long distances to take leftover or uneaten food with them.
The longer the stay, the more groceries can get left behind.
But the Airbnb host explained that any opened food or beverage — expensive liquor included — has to be discarded.
“Not the Don Julio,” commented @kerlandesimone.
“My heart hurts when I have to do that,” Giullianna admitted.
In another video comment, Giullianna explained that she keeps unopened items and often shares them with her property cleaners as well.
She recently even found a designer Marc Jacobs bag, hat and scarf that a guest had left behind and after contacting them, discovered the guest no longer wanted the items.
The guest told Giullianna that the Marc Jacobs bag had been a gift from a friend who was no longer her friend, so she had no desire to get the back bag — so Giullianna kept the items.
“Her loss your gain,” noted @camilleadams2593.
It’s also pretty evident when a guest has hosted a party, such as many of the recent post-bachelorette party items she found.
“The amount of heart shaped glasses you get!!” pointed out @cathiehillsutton.
Giullianna has found so many items that she even proposed doing giveaways with some of the big-ticket bridal items she has found that guests no longer want or claim.
“I’m invested in all these vid can’t wait to see what folks left behind imma put my name in the hat for the drawing,” said @mzgtictoc.
What Airbnb says about cleanup and forgotten items
Airbnb’s “ground rules” stipulate that any guests staying on Airbnb properties should treat the grounds “like their own home,” and:
Not leave the listing in a state that requires excessive or deep cleaning (such as moldy dishes, soiled carpets, stains from pets, etc.)
Understand that cleaning fees set by hosts are only meant to cover the cost of standard cleaning between reservations, like laundry, vacuuming, etc.
Put their trash in designated trash receptacles and be mindful of excessive amounts of trash.
Aside from the ground rules, it’s up to the hosts to determine what has gone beyond the standard cleaning and guests can incur post-stay fees for damages.
According to Airbnb, guests can contact a prior host directly if they forget something after their stay, although there are no guarantees the host will find it or send it back.
Guests can also offer to send the host money to cover shipping costs for any items they would like returned.
Giullianna also explained in a comment that she has had guests contact her after their stay to send back forgotten items, and based on her efforts to track down the guest who forgot her purse, she is happy to oblige.
She also isn’t bothered by any leftover items that guests don’t wish to retrieve. Giullianna explained in one of her videos that she does not expect guests to clean as part of her host policy, so her guests may leave more behind than other properties would allow.
“As long as there is no damage, everything is perfect to me!” she wrote in one of her videos.
