A pencil skirt should be your very next new purchase. Fact. It's probably a silhouette you haven't got in your wardrobe yet but, whether it's knee-length or the newer mid-calf style, it will add instant polish to your autumn/winter look.

Wear it with a sharp cotton shirt and slingback points, a cashmere jumper and ankle boots or for evening with a dramatic blouse. Here are our Fashion Director's favourite pencil skirt styles and how to wear them this season...

The Black Gloss Leather One

Black gloss can be a smart daytime choice if you play the glamour down with a simple white T-shirt and classic blazer. Add a flash of colour with a pair of pretty red bow mules.

The Smart Wool Burgundy One

Burgundy is a fresh new shade to embrace. It has all the smart, uniform appeal that you get from navy, grey and green but is softer and looks especially chic with chocolate and tan. Match a slim fit wool pencil skirt with a chunky Fairisle knit, ankle boots give the whole look a fashion edge but try loafers for something altogether more preppy.

The Chic Cream Tailored One

A cream pencil skirt is the ultimate in low key luxury, especially when worn for evening with a contrasting, black satin puffed sleeve top and skin tone patent mules. It would work well with a cream cashmere sweater and silver glitter earrings too or, for day, with a camel roll neck and matching belted wool coat.
