Stranger Things Season 4's filming is underway but there's already talk that a fifth season of the hit Netflix show is on the horizon.
Last year, actor David Harbour – who plays police chief Jim Hopper – revealed that production for the series’ fourth season had been shut down due to Covid-19 safety concerns. As a result, it’s believed the season’s widely speculated 2021 release date has been pushed back.
‘[Season 4 was] supposed to come out early next year, I think, although I don't have authority on this,’ Harbour explained in an IG livestream last March.
The actor continued, adding ‘due to all the delays, this release window is likely to be pushed back’. While Netflix is yet to confirm a delayed release date, Harbour recently shared an Instagram Live from the set of Stranger Things, which suggests the Down Under gang is still filming the show, so it seems it'll be quite some time before shooting a fifth season is set in motion.
While fans have been speculating about the release date for season four for several months, it seems they’ll now also have to contend with the possibility of a fifth season.
Here’s everything you need to know about rumours of Stranger Things Season 5.
Has Stranger Things Season 5 been confirmed?
Netflix hasn’t confirmed that a fifth season of the series is in the works. But, from comments made by the cast and crew in recent months, it sounds like its creators aren’t quite done with the Hawkins gang.
In an interview last August with The Hollywood Reporter, co-creator Ross Duffer revealed: ‘Season 4 won't be the end [of Stranger Things]. We know what the end is, and we know when it is.
‘[The pandemic] has given us time to look ahead, figure out what is best for the show. Starting to fill that out gave us a better idea of how long we need to tell that story.’
The Duffer duo know exactly what’s in store for Eleven and her pals and it sounds like there’s a lot more to come after Season 4. Bring it on!
What have the 'Stranger Things' cast said about Season 5?
In an interview with Gold Derby last June, Harbour seemingly opened up about the possibility of episodes beyond Season 4.
‘I will tell you in Season 4 and in Season 5, if we’re ever able to film again, there is a lot to be revealed around the complexities of [Hopper’s] story, which is really rich, and I’m really excited for you to see,’ he stated.
‘Because we know the ending, you’ll be able to go back and watch it and see, you know, what we were planting in Season 3 that paid off in Season 4 and Season 5.’
The news came after the Season 3 finale saw his character sacrifice himself so that Joyce Byers (played by Winona Ryder) could close the gate on the Upside Down while he was trapped in a room with a deadly laser.
While many fans believed Hopper to have died, the closing scenes suggested he was, in fact, alive.
In September 2019, the show’s creators released a trailer for its fourth series which showed a glimpse of what appears to be Hopper and Eleven’s house in the woods in the Upside Down.
In the 45-second clip, the house’s outside light shines, flickers and then goes out before the words ‘We’re not in Hawkins anymore’ appear across the screen.
Netflix later confirmed that Harbour was set to return for Season 4 when it released a video of the Stranger Things 4 table read which features actors Millie Bobby Brown, Winona Ryder, Natalia Dyer, Finn Wolfhard, Noah Schnapp, Caleb McLaughlin, Maya Hawke, and Harbour.
Last February, the creators shared a trailer for Season 4 featuring Harbour titled 'From Russia with love', which sees his character hammering a train track with a bald head in snowy weather.
Suffice it to say, Hopper is back.
When is the release date for Season 5?
Seeing as Season 4 of the show hasn't even wrapped yet, it's likely we'll be waiting quite some time for Season 5.
As a result, news regarding spoilers, confirmed cast, trailers and plot will likely come at the very earliest in 2021, presumably after Season 4 airs.
We will continue updating this piece.
