Storm Herminia 'danger to life' warning issued just days after Éowyn wreaks havoc in Scotland

The UK is braced for more wild weather with a new storm battering the country. The Met Office has issued yellow alerts for wind and rain for southern England and Wales this morning, with Storm Herminia set to cause flooding and power interruption to London and the surrounding areas.

This comes just days after Storm Éowyn caused destruction throughout Scotland with 100mph winds, torrential rain and sadly claimed the lives of two people. Railway crews are still dealing with the aftermath of the storm as there were an unprecedented 500 incidents to tackle over the weekend.

The rare red weather warning on Friday, January 24, caused around 100,000 Scots to be left without power. Storm Éowyn's galeforce blasts caused severe damage, with trees being blown over, roofs damaged, fences destroyed, and large amounts of debris flying off buildings.

As the weather has begun to settle in Scotland, the Met Office has issued new alerts for Eowyn's successor; Storm Herminia. The forecaster has issued a "danger to life" warning for the weatherfront, which has approached the UK from Spain.

London has already been under yellow warnings of wind since 6am on Monday morning, and forecasters are expecting this to reach galeforce level across southern England between now and tomorrow morning, reports the Mirror.

Heavy rain is set to cover the southern region until 10am tomorrow, which could turn into lightning and hail as the storm worsens. The Met Office forecast states: "The strong winds will drive in a succession of showers, some of them heavy, through Monday and Monday night, before slowly easing during Tuesday morning.

"With the ground so wet, these are likely to produce or sustain some flooding impacts, primarily affecting road travel. Additional hazards could include further lightning strikes, and hail making road conditions dangerous."

A second warning has also been issued for rain and "strong and gusty" winds that are most likely to affect southern parts of England and Wales throughout Monday and into Tuesday morning. It states: "Gusts to 60 or 70 mph are possible near the coast, with gusts of 50mph possible inland. Winds will gradually ease from the west on Tuesday morning."

Those thinking of traveling to London or southern England in the next couple of days should do so with caution. The Met Office has warned that there is a chance of flooding which could affect travel, homes and businesses.

Public transport may also be affected with longer journey times or being cancelled, and there could be some interruption to power supplies. People living in coastal areas are also being warned to stay safe as there is a high chance of large waves.

Storm Herminia hit parts of Spain and France this weekend as it moved towards the UK, with the Met Office initially warning the storm could cause injuries and bring a "danger to life". The public are being warned to prepare for chances of power cuts and to check if your property is at risk of flooding.
