I have extensive experience in small-space living. Heck, I’d consider myself an expert at this point — for the most part, I’ve lived in tiny apartments my entire adult life. In college, it was cramped dorms for a couple of years, and then I graduated to a studio of comparable size. (Seriously: My fridge was in my living room.) Briefly, I moved into a larger space with roommates, but this year, I went back to my tiny living roots. It took a bit of adjusting to get used to it again, but honestly, I like the challenge. I like figuring out smart ways to make a small space work.

You’ve come to the right place if you’re in need of some inspiration for your own tiny space, even if it’s a compact bedroom rather than a whole apartment. We have a slew of ideas, rules, and product selections that’ll transform your living situation. One suggestion that our editors swear by? Investing in double-duty furniture. Why get a regular bench for the foot of your bed, for instance, when you can opt for a storage bench and save closet space? Walmart has one such item, and it has an extra feature that makes it even more clever than other storage benches. Find out why below!

What is the Holaki Storage Bench?

At first glance, this gem looks like your average — albeit stylish — storage bench. It gives off a modern vibe, with its oval shape, golden legs, and tufted detailing on the front side. The sherpa material it’s wrapped in is as trendy as it is cozy. At 19 inches deep, it’s also narrow enough to fit in a tight space, though it’s wide enough at almost 48 inches to fit at the end of your bed. Once you lift the top, the interior is a little over eight inches deep and 27 inches wide, perfect for extra T-shirts or blankets. The real kicker, though, is that the top also lifts up smoothly to become a raised table.

If you don’t have room for a desk in your tiny space — I’ve been there — then this is an excellent solution. You can sit at the foot of your bed and balance your laptop on the platform; you can place your coffee on it in the morning while you lounge in bed. You don’t even have to use it at the foot of your bed, necessarily. Instead, it could be a sort of footstool-coffee table hybrid, and you can have it function as a dinner table while you sit on your couch. It’s so smart that I don’t know why all storage benches don’t have this function.

The Holaki storage bench is essentially a triple threat rather than just double: It provides extra seating, hidden storage, and a table surface. All of that makes its $200 price tag totally worth it, in my opinion as a self-proclaimed small-space expert.
