Here’s what staying in an historic Italian Villa is really like

Villa Sigurtà in Tuscany review Jess bantleman

Although the British summer time is in full swing, you’d be forgiven for thinking otherwise. With grey skies, regular downpours and the need to throw on an extra layer or two before you leave the house, it’s safe to say we’re dreaming of sunnier climates and locations that transport us far, far away.

So with that in mind, how does staying in a villa nestled between the sun-drenched shores of Lake Garda and the romance of Verona sound? Oh and better yet, you can bring 22 of your closest friends and family for the full royal treatment, fully serviced with chef and maid service. It’s giving Saltburn, in the best possible way.

Villa Sigurtà is a 10-bedroom hideaway in a private corner of the famed Parco Giardino Sigurta, and was once a cherished home to European aristocracy. Today, guests are welcomed for the very first time to the idyllic grounds, for a dreamy accumulation of history and natural beauty everywhere you look.

This isn’t your regular villa getaway — it’s an unparalleled experience where frescoed interiors, famous gardens, three elegant pools and so much more, become exclusively yours.

So what’s the vibe?

In one word? Breathtaking. History seeps through the walls of every room, without feeling stuffy, the grounds - aka the first ‘English’ garden in Italy - are beautiful and blooming, and the pool? It’s easy enough to imagine yourself spending a week here entirely.

The caveat of Villa Sigurtà is that it has to be booked exclusively, so it's certainly more of a lavish affair, but one that is intended to be shared with your loved ones. Family is really at the heart of this Villa, with the Count and his family taking residence here throughout the year, so it makes sense that they want to continue the legacy of family-style hosting with their unique guest offering.

The property itself is located about 30 minutes from Verona airport, but it feels miles away from the bustle of the city. Enclosed in its own oasis - fronted by large giant gates, of course - a trip to Villa Sigurtà is unforgettable, from the moment you step onto the property.

Tell me about the rooms…

Each of the 10 bedrooms are completely unique, from the cobalt blue-tiled bath in one, to the ornate decorations in another, each one offers something special, thanks again to the imaginative decorations of Tony Duquette.

As well as the six suites in the main villa, there are also three fully air-conditioned guest houses located on the estate, both with a charming plunge pool.

I stayed in Villa Clelia, which was tucked away amidst the gardens. This guesthouse was previously a golfing retreat for notable figures such as Alexander Flemming and Queen Victoria Eugénie of Spain, but aside from some historically tasteful decor, the room feels fresh and new.

The mezzanine level for sleeping was a nice touch, and I can imagine that this would host a small family for a stay perfectly. Walking back to your own hideaway after dinner through the peaceful grounds? An Italian dream.=And what’s the food like?

The indoor dining room, the Salone della Caccia, seats up to 20 people for meals, so you can imagine the occasions that can be hosted here. The special part about staying in a villa, and certainly about Villa Sigurtà is that you are treated every day to incredibly thought out meals, prepared by the villa’s dedicated team of six stands ready to cater from 8:30am to 10:30pm. They really did create a seamless, family-style experience, from the beautiful buffet breakfast to the impressive dinners, and of course, an aperitif on the terrace and post-dinner drinks by the piano.

Meals can be tailored to your preference, but there is a local culinary tradition of Valeggio sul Mincio, particularly the Tortellini di Valeggio, known as The Love Knot (“Nodo d’Amore”) that you need to try. It's a special tortellini shape inspired by a local legend of love between a Visconte captain and a nymph. Delicious and romanti

Anything else?

If you’re holidaying with guests who can’t sit still by one of the three pools, or find pleasure in wandering the grounds with a good book (you know the ones) then there is plenty to do outside the villa. The charming town of Valeggio sul Mincio offers a selection of restaurants, bars, and bakeries, all conveniently within walking distance. Just 500 metres away, you'll find the quaint Borghetto sul Mincio, one of Italy's most beautiful villages, nestled along the rushing Mincio River. We stopped here for dinner one evening, and I promise you the walk alone is worth it. You can wander around the city’s ancient watermills-turned-restaurants, local craft shops, 14th-century bridge and the ruins of Castello Scaligero.

Of course, you aren’t far from Lake Garda, Italy’s largest lake. The perfect spot for sunset boat rides, waterfront dinners and thermal springs at Sirmione.

Go there!
