Starbucks Debuts a New Green Drink for St. Patrick’s Day

The drink was inspired by a “pot o’ gold at the end of the rainbow.”

Step aside, Shamrock Shake.

Starbucks just debuted its fun, green specialty drink for St. Patrick’s Day — and fans are seriously loving it. The new menu item, called Luck of the Matcha Crème Frappuccino, is essentially a regular Matcha Crème Frappuccino with extra caramel in every element of the drink: caramel syrup is blended in, the whipped cream is topped with caramel sauce, and it has a “crunchy caramel-sugar topping.”

The result? A super frothy and mega-sweet concoction fit for the sweetest of sweet tooths. “Inspired by a pot o’ gold at the end of the rainbow,” indeed.

There’s even more good news exclusively for Starbucks Rewards members. On Thursday, March 14, from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m., Starbucks is running a buy-one, get-one promotion on all handcrafted drinks. That means you can get a Luck of the Matcha Crème Frappuccino for free with another purchase. Heck, you can even get two if you’re so inclined. To claim the deal, just order ahead using the Starbucks app or ask your barista for the promotion at the counter. (And don’t worry if you aren’t a member; it’s easy to join for free.)

And while the drink is only available for a limited time beginning this week, it should be noted that once it leaves menus, guests can actually still order the drink by way of the kind of hyper customization the Seattle-based coffee chain is known for. Simply request that your barista include caramel syrup and caramel sauce with your Matcha Crème order, and voila! You get the Luck of the Matcha.

Now, if frappuccinos aren’t your thing, Starbucks has another green specialty drink available: the Iced Lavender Cream Oatmilk Matcha, which is from the chain’s new spring menu. Decidedly less sweet, it consists of matcha and oat milk poured over ice before being topped off with lavender cold cream foam.

“When creating the new Iced Lavender Cream Oatmilk Matcha, we wanted to capture the uplifting energy of spring in a cup,” Patrick Penny, a lead beverage developer, said in a statement. “The vibrant green matcha topped with lavender-hued cold foam delivers a delightfully colorful and unexpectedly delicious flavor combination.”
