ABOUT THIS BEFORE & AFTER

HOME TYPE: Apartment

PROJECT TYPE: Bedroom

STYLE: Glam, Parisian, Traditional

SKILL LEVEL: DIY

RENTAL FRIENDLY: Yes

Hotels often provide design inspiration for at-home bedrooms, and that was the case for Nnedy Obiwuru (@everylastlayer) and her fiancé, Jon Henson. Their bedroom started as a carpeted gray “standard” rental bedroom, per Obiwuru.

“Now, every day feels like a staycation in my own home!” she writes on Instagram. Here’s how she and Henson made it happen.

The walls got a green paint and molding makeover.

Obiwuru and Henson added picture frame molding to the walls and painted the walls olive green (Behr’s Jungle Camouflage), one of Obiwuru’s favorite colors. They also hung similar ochre-colored curtains, which give the room luxe and depth and make the room feel “ like a cozy hotel suite,” as Obiwuru describes.

Obiwuru and Henson also upgraded the walls by adding some open shelving to the corner of the room.

The ceiling has a fun stripe detail.

The couple used the same paint color to create a special stripe paint detail on the ceiling, one of Obiwuru’s favorite parts of the transformation.

It’s the perfect project if you don’t want to spend money and time (or neck cramping) on crown molding or color drenching. All you need is painter’s tape and a little bit of extra paint (or the sample from picking a paint color in the first place).

Small details create a “hotel vibe.”

Lastly, the couple took inspiration from hotel rooms they love when landing on accessories and decor. They swapped the ceiling fan for a crystal chandelier, and they selected monogrammed bedding from Etsy.

“Our favorite boutique hotels have large art, so we made sure to find one that made a statement,” Obiwuru says on Instagram. (You can find the same print here!)

“What makes … boutique hotels so romantic is how they play with mood lighting,” she adds. Obiwuru and Henson added renter-friendly wall lights and rechargeable lamps to achieve the look.
