This Sprawling 200-Year-Old Castle in Northern Ireland Could Be Yours for $4.5 Million
This 175-year-old real-life castle in Northern Ireland has real historical cachet. Last listed for sale in 1959, Elmfield, as the manor house is known, dates back to the 1850s when Scottish architect William Spence originally built it for a local linen magnate named James Dickson. On the market for the first time in 65 years, the baronial fortress is asking £3.35 million ($4.5 million). By comparison, in the U.S., that same amount of cash will snag you Emmy-winning TV composer Jeff Beal’s house in Southern California or a duplex loft in New York City that was once the site of Studio 54 after-hours parties.
“Elmfield is a truly exceptional property that represents the best of Northern Ireland’s heritage,” says James Butler, director at Savills Ireland. “The combination of historic charm and modern amenities creates a unique living experience, while the estate’s diverse features offer something for everyone, from residential to agricultural and commercial uses.”

Set on a sprawling 90 acres of parkland, Elmfield is highlighted by its natural surroundings. Belgian landscape architect Francois Goffinet recently spruced up the grounds, which include lush formal gardens and a picturesque lake. There’s also plenty of fertile land and farm buildings if you’re the homesteading green-thumb type, plus fishing opportunities on the meandering River Bann.
Elmfield retains its rusticated stone facade, a slender turret that rises four stories, and a roofline embellished with dainty spires. The interiors are equally works of art and preservation, complete with an oak-paneled entryway, original hardwood floors, and sash windows.
Altogether, the 6,900-square-foot castle comprises six bedrooms, two reception rooms, and a grand dining hall. The drawing room is a standout space decked out with an Italian marble fireplace and double French doors that open to the garden terrace, while the chef’s kitchen is complete with an Aga range and an adjoining family room that, in turn, leads to a glass-enclosed atrium.
In addition to the castle, a two-story studio that doubles as a conference complex sits in a cobbled courtyard that dates from the 1700s. The complex was recently renovated in 2019. For guests, family or staff, the country spread also counts a three-bedroom cottage, a two-bedroom apartment, and a two-bed owner’s lodge as part of the package.
“The breadth of opportunity at Elmfield is unparalleled,” adds Neal Morrison, director at Savills Northern Island. “Whether you are looking for a family home steeped in history, an investment in Northern Ireland’s thriving agricultural sector, or a versatile property for business or leisure pursuits, Elmfield truly stands out as a one-of-a-kind estate.”
