The Split fans rejoice! Bad Sisters’ Sharon Horgan is bringing us a brilliant new divorce drama
It’s been two whole months since The Split spin-off officially left our screens and we’re seriously missing it – which is why we’re thanking our lucky stars that Sharon Horgan is bringing us a replacement. Not just any replacement, we might add, but a truly brilliant sounding one that stars none other than the woman herself. This is Sharon Horgan we're talking about, after all.
The creator of Motherland, Amandaland, Catastrophe – in fact, just about every comedy drama we’re slightly obsessed with – will write, star in and executive produce the new series, which will follow a 50-year-old divorcee’s search for sex and love whilst she cares for her parents as well as her should-be grown-up son. And given Horgan's track record, chances are there will be at least one thing we can all relate to in the show.
Partnering with HBO for the project, Sharon said in a statement: "I’m so happy to once again be working with Casey, Amy, Francesca and the team at HBO, and really excited that Merman get to continue to tell stories for a company that’s been home to some of the most iconic television shows ever created."
It’s not the first time Horgan has tackled divorce on screen, having previously created the HBO comedy Divorce, which starred Sarah Jessica Parker and Thomas Haden Church as a middle-aged couple going through divorce. The brutally honest comedy was utterly brilliant and struck a chord with fans across the globe.
Horgan has also experienced the reality of divorce for herself. She was married to businessman Jeremy Rainbird from 2005 until they split in 2019 and the pair now co-parent their two daughters, Sadhbh and Amer.
"It’s tough because it’s just me, but we make it work," she told The Sunday Times. "It’s a bit of a circus family; my work/life balance had to change, and that’s good. But when I take a job the girls are incredibly encouraging because they know I’d really rather be with them."
Amy Gravitt, executive vice president, HBO and Max comedy programming, has hinted that some of Horgan’s personal experiences with the subject may well make it into the series. "We’re thrilled to be reunited with Sharon. Her willingness to offer up her own experiences through the characters she creates makes us all feel a little less lonely, that is what sets her comedy apart so brilliantly," she said in an official statement.
“She also has such a sharp eye for material and a strong desire to shepherd other people’s stories, we’re looking forward to the new talent she will bring into the fold.”
While Horgan herself is the only confirmed cast member in her new series so far, we can’t help but wonder whether she'll bring some of her Bad Sisters co-stars along for the ride. Might we see Eve Hewson or Anne-Marie Duff as her best friend, perhaps? Here’s hoping.
If you’re wondering how you can watch the currently untitled series, given that Horgan has teamed up with HBO for the project, it’s more than likely that it will air on Sky Atlantic in the UK. When that will be however, remains to be seen. As soon as we know more, we’ll share the details.
