Spencer Matthews on 'losing everything' as he addresses problems with booze

Spencer Matthews has candidly admitted that he was "certain" he would lose wife Vogue Williams if he didn't stop his heavy boozing.

The Made In Chelsea star, 35, met Vogue back in 2017 when they both competed in TV show The Jump, and the early days of their relationship featured plenty of boozy nights out.

But after a wake-up call when Vogue, 38, was pregnant with their eldest child Theo, Spencer realised he would have to turn his back on his hard-partying days to be able to keep their family life.

He quit drinking and signed up to a series of ultra marathon challenges, announcing the latest this week as he told Lorraine he would be making a world record attempt to complete 30 marathons on sand in 30 days.

However, life used to look very different for reality TV star Spencer, who told The Mail's Everything I Know About Me podcast: "There was a certainty that I would lose Vogue, if I carried on drinking the way I was drinking."

Spencer admitted there had been a culture of heavy drinking while he was on The Jump, which he managed to win after going sober for the final 10 days, but said that after his win he went on a "mental bender" and "lost everything" which made him feel like his life was a mess for the first time.

He added that Vogue isn't keen on alcohol and now only drinks around once a month, but said that when they first met she used to drink every few days with him drinking even on the days when she stayed sober.

The dad-of-three told how the turning point came when Vogue was pregnant with their eldest child Theo and he felt he had let her down by continuing to drink, saying: "There was a general level of disappointment in her about me. Which felt s**t, right, because I've always wanted people who are close to me to be proud of me."

Spencer said that one night he had got into bed with her after drinking most of a bottle of whisky and vowed to give up booze, adding: "She didn't really believe me, and neither did anybody else. I didn't drink for three and a half years, just stopped."

The next morning he signed up to his first ultra marathon challenge which would see him run six and a half marathons in five days in the Sahara Desert.

Spencer, who had to leave 2015's I'm A Celebrity over medical concerns about his steroid use, is now the picture of health and even launched a low-alcohol drinks company The Clean Liquor Company in 2019.
