Sophie Turner Reflects On The ‘Struggle’ Of Being A Single Mother In New Series 'Joan'
Sophie Turner has opened up about parenting following her divorce from Joe Jonas.
The Game Of Thrones actor, 28, discussed parenthood ahead of the release of her six-part crime series Joan in which she plays the real-life thief Joan 'The Godmother' Hannington.
Turner and Jonas, who split last year after four years of marriage, are parents to two daughters: Willa, four, and Delphine, two. Earlier this summer, Turner went Instagram official with her rumoured boyfriend, Peregrine Pearson.
‘Joan changed me quite a lot. From utter desperation comes so much will and ambition,’ Turner told The Sunday Times Culture Magazine. 'The series came around at a time in my life where I had to be ambitious and I had to have such strong will and fight against the forces. She gave me a lot of strength.

'If I hadn't been a mother, I don't know if I would have been able to bring the same energy that I did into it. It's such a struggle being a single mother,' she says of her character, Joan.
Turner’s new series, which airs on Sunday September 29 on ITV, explores Joan's evolution from housewife to criminal mastermind in the 1980s.
‘She is so funny but she has gone through so much trauma and is so ambitious,’ she previously said of her character. ‘There really is so much to her – mother, lover, liar, thief. It's just remarkable that it's all a true story.'
The actor reflected in a press conference about how being a mother enabled her to tap into emotions portrayed in the series. ‘I'm a mother, so anything to do with children and it just flows out. I think sometimes when you are doing a show like this and there's diamonds and glamour, you get swept away by it all,’ she said.
‘You have to remember that this is to provide a solid and stable life for her daughter so she can get her back. And it's really a heartbreaking story.'
Earlier this summer, Turner spoke to ELLE UK about what motherhood and her upcoming show have taught her.
'You will go to the ends of the Earth for your children,' she said. 'You'll do whatever you can to provide them with the best life you can provide them with. It’s something I could relate to because when I auditioned for Joan I’d just given birth to my second child.
'I had that motherly instinct pouring out of me, it was animalistic. I felt that with Joan. Her daughter Kelly was her whole motivation for doing everything she did, and that’s kind of what I spend my life doing. I live for my children. I love it and want to do it – it’s the best thing ever.’
