Sophie Turner posts video mocking influencers who promote diet products

Actor Sophie Turner has criticised influencers who promote diet products via social media.

In the video, uploaded as an Instagram story, the 23-year-old Game of Thrones star filmed herself overlaid with a filter that made her lips larger and added extra rouge to her cheeks.

"Hey, you guys, just kind of going for my influencer look today,” said Turner, affecting an American accent.

"Today I just wanted to promote this new powdered stuff that you put in your tea. And basically it makes you sh*t your brains out and is totally really, really bad for me to be promoting to young women and young people everywhere, but I don't really give a f**k because I'm getting paid money for it."

Fans reacted with largely positive comments.

"Thank you so much!" tweeted one fan. "So many women NEEDED this!"

Over the past few years, influencers have been criticised by a range of high profile individuals for marketing diet products on Instagram.

Campaigners argue that the lack of regulation means vulnerable young people are exposed to dangerous messages about weight loss that can impact physical and mental health.

Earlier this year, Professor Stephen Powis, the medical director for NHS England, said social media companies should ban "irresponsible" weight-loss aid adverts.

In September, Instagram announced new restrictions on posts relating to diet products and cosmetic surgery.

Under the new policy, users under-18 will be prevented from seeing uploads that promote certain diet products or cosmetic procedures if content include prices or an incentive to buy.

Additionally, posts that make fantastical claims about the effects of weight-loss products and are linked to commercial promotions, such as offering a discount code, will be removed from the platform altogether.

The new regulations were developed with the input of actor and presenter Jameela Jamil, whose IWeigh initiative has repeatedly condemned prominent social media influencers, like the Kardashian family, for endorsing products like appetite suppressant lollies and diet teas.
