Somebody has died at Burning Man as extreme weather hits the festival
A person has sadly died at Burning Man festival – the annual gathering that takes place in Black Rock City, in the Nevada desert. This year, the site has been hit by severe rain, turning the spot into a 'mud bath', leaving thousands of attendees stranded and seeking shelter.
Police have shared minimal details in relation to the death, other than saying it occurred "during this rain event".
Warnings have been given to festival attendees that it'd be smart to ration their food and informing them that no toilets are currently in working use. Roads in and out of the site have reportedly been closed due to flooding.
Around 80,000 people attend Burning Man each year; the festival is known for not having any food stalls, encouraging attendees to befriend their neighbours and having an anti-capitalist mentality (tickets cost between $575 to $2,750).
The US Bureau of Land Management, the organisation that manages the land that Burning Man takes place on, issued a statement reading: "Rain over the last 24 hours has created a situation that required a full stop of vehicle movement on the playa.
"More rain is expected over the next few days and conditions are not expected to improve enough to allow vehicles to enter the playa."
Despite the challenging weather conditions, Sky News report that many attendees have remained in good spirits and are determined to ride out the rain.
