A Solar-Powered Private Island in the Florida Keys Hits the Market for $21.9 Million
What’s the coolest hideaway in the Florida Keys, a locale known for its relaxed vacation getaways? How about your own private island? Howell Key, an off-grid retreat where you can truly get away from it all, has just hit the market for a cool $21.9 million. The island sanctuary last sold in 2010 for $1.2 million.
The 10-acre oasis is the only private island currently for sale in the Florida Keys and holds the title of the priciest listing in the Middle and Lower Florida Keys. But, if you’re worried about too much isolation, the property is a short five-minute boat ride from nearby Summerland Key. Or, considering the spread has a helipad, you can also come and go by chopper.

“This is a complete turnkey, fully furnished property that provides a peaceful, tropical escape from the ordinary,” notes the listing, which is being represented by Rebecca Lacey with Ocean Sotheby’s International Realty.
Altogether, Howell Key features an energy-efficient main house with a spacious and light-filled open living, dining, and kitchen area, along with five bedrooms, four bathrooms, and a saltwater swimming pool. The abode was constructed using structural insulated panels (SIPS), considered more sustainable than wood or brick as building materials.

The entire island is totally self-sufficient and powered by solar energy, Sebastian Del Negro, a managing broker at Ocean Sotheby’s International Realty, told Mansion Global. There’s also a 50,000-gallon freshwater tank with a reverse-osmosis water filtration system and a wastewater recycling system.
“The layout of the house is for outside living mostly,” Del Negro explained. “You have AC split units but they barely use them, because you have nice fresh ocean air all the time…Everything is very eco-fantastic. It’s an amazing property.”

In addition to the main house, you’ll also find a separate guest residence, a garage, animal pens, a pickleball court, and a tiki hut set on its own stretch of beach. Since the island is only accessible via boat or helicopter, there’s dockage for vessels up to 50 feet long in a small harbor just past an automated electric gate. The island conveys with a fenced-in parcel on one of the larger nearby keys, where you can securely park your vehicles, and there’s a 58-foot seawall “to accommodate your personal ferry.”
