Should smoking be completely banned for young people? Poll of the week

Yahoo UK's poll of the week lets you vote and indicate your strength of feeling on one of the week's hot topics. Smoking is one of the leading causes of death and sickness in the UK, and the UK government is taking radical steps to curb it among young people.

In October, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak proposed new legislation that makes it an offence for anyone born on or after 1 January 2009 to be sold tobacco products.

The government plans to raise the legal smoking age by a year every year, with the aim that anyone born after January 2009 will never be allowed to buy cigarettes.

This week, Sunak also announced plans to ban disposable vapes, as well as plans to restrict child-friendly vape flavours and packaging to crack down on their use among children.

The NHS says that smoking kills around 76,000 people in the UK every year, and many more people are living with debilitating illnesses related to the habit.

Smoking causes around 70% of all lung cancer cases, and has been linked to cancer in other parts of the body, including mouth, throat, oesophagus, bladder, bowel, cervix, kidney, liver, stomach, and pancreas.

A YouGov poll, commissioned by Action on Smoking and Health, found that majority of adults in England back the government's plans to phase out smoking.
