Smoked salmon shines throughout the Christmas period; a great light starter before the turkey, a canapé topping for festive nibbles, or an indulgent addition to your Christmas breakfast.

Sourced from all over the world, the best smoked salmon is firstly dried and cured before being seasoned or glazed, often with dill, mustard, lemon or garlic (to name a few). The fish is then hot or cold smoked over various woods – typically beech and oak but sometimes maple or birch too – to further enhance the flavour.

Store your smoked salmon on the bottom shelf of the fridge, where it’s the coldest. Unopened, it should remain fresh for weeks but once opened, place in a zip-lock bag or keep it in the original packaging and seal with clingfilm.

How we test

Our consumer panel assessed the appearance, aroma, flavour and texture of each smoked salmon. We were looking for delicately sliced pieces of fish with a healthy colour and appetising marbling throughout. The flavour should offer a delicate smokiness with an even balance of salt, and finish with a slightly sweet, fishy note. Take a look at our winners below.
