This Sleek New Zealand Home Is in Stark Contrast to Its Rugged Surroundings
This sleek estate on New Zealand’s South Island doesn’t make you choose between mountain or river views. Set against the picturesque Shotover River and surrounded by striking alpine ranges, you get the best of both worlds.
Spanning nearly 10 acres, the property is located on the rugged outskirts of Queenstown, also known as the adventure capital of the world. Split across two levels, the sleek pad features five bedrooms and five bathrooms in a generous 4,380 square feet of living space. Currently, the eye-catching contemporary abode is operating as a 12-person vacation rental. However, for a cool NZ$7,350,000 (or roughly $11.9 million), you can make this country retreat your permanent home away from home.

Completed in 2014, the light-filled digs were propped up on a private elevated knoll and honor the local environment with tons of glass walls that frame the landscape. From the outside, the structure does a great job of blending in with its surroundings. For example, the exterior sports tons of wood shingles that mesh well with the rural area. Dubbed Pikorua, the house gets its name from an important Māori symbol representative of two intertwining Pikopiko ferns—a native New Zealand plant found in the local forests. As you enter, you’ll find a super cool Pikorua statue positioned in the foyer.
To make the most of its placement, the swanky residence is decked out with large glass windows and doors, so you’re practically guaranteed a scenic backdrop at every turn. Past the entrance, the main level comprises an open-plan living, dining, and kitchen area with soaring ceilings that give the central hub of the home an “atrium-like feeling,” notes the listing, which is held by Sarah McBride and Sarena Glass of Sotheby’s International Realty. From here, bi-fold doors lead out to a lush, landscaped outdoor entertaining area that has a barbecue area and an intimate courtyard. Elsewhere, the main level holds a media room and two ensuite guest bedrooms.
A sculptural floating staircase leads up to the massive primary suite. Among the highlights are a spa-like ensuite bath and a generously sized walk-in wardrobe with river vistas. There are also two additional bedrooms on this level, plus a home office, which can potentially double as a second living room. However, considering the location, we’d bet you’ll be spending most of your time outdoors.
