Ski technique: how to strengthen core stability

When the core is disengaged while skiing the upper body collapses and folds putting pressure on the lower back. “From this compromised position, it’s more difficult to turn,” says Telegraph Ski and Snowboard ski technique editor Warren Smith, who was also ski coach for Channel 4’s The Jump. Engaging your core allows legs to act as shock absorbers in all types of terrain, including chopped up off-piste, and keeps the upper body stable – below we describe how to develop core stability

Warren is part of the Völkl International Freeski Team and one of Europe’s most acclaimed ski coaches. He’s a Level 4 International Instructor and Tutor (IASI) and Level 4 Performance Coach (IVSI). He set up the Warren Smith Ski Academy 18 years ago to offer recreational skiers performance coaching rather than standard ski school lessons. Its groundbreaking courses (held in Verbier, Cervinia, Niseko, Revelstoke and at UK indoor slopes) have transformed the skills of thousands of recreational skiers, instructors and athletes, and received extensive praise.

Key muscles

The core is made up of several groups of muscles includingthe diaphragm and pelvic floor. These muscles work together to maximise stability in the abdominal and lumbar region andhelp the movement of arms, legs and spine.

How to develop core stability

1. Use the plank exercise

Rest on your elbows and assume a straight, flat position from head to toe. Hold this position for as long as possible. This helps to develop the muscle contraction needed in longer turns.

2. Try it sideways

Lie on your side and prop body on elbow, once again trying to keep a straight position – this will help develop the lateral core muscles.

3. Flatten and extend

Engage core by flattening spine against the ground. Then slowly draw both feet up towards the hips. Slowly extend the feet back to a fully lengthened position, keeping the core muscles engaged throughout the exercise.
