Six tips for making new mum friends

With all the feeding sessions and diaper changes, keeping up with friends isn't a priority for a new parent.

But once you are out of the newborn stage, it can be super helpful to establish a support system in order to have relatable conversations about the ups and downs of motherhood, share advice, ask each other questions, and for mums to know that they aren't alone.

But finding these people isn't necessarily easy, so Holly Zoccolan, parenting expert and founder of the Carol app, has shared her top tips for making new mum friends.

Join a local baby group

Baby groups are great ways to meet other mums with children of the same age, and also, a great way to bond with your little one and get out of the house.

"You can find local baby groups on social media, Facebook, and Instagram as well as searching on Google or by checking your local village hall notice boards," she said.

Parenting apps

Find a parenting app that supports and helps you meet new mums in your local area. Mush and Peanut have been around for a few years, while Holly recommends checking out her new app Carol, which connects and supports mums.

"Mothers can meet like-minded mums who live close by, have children of the same age, join and create their own groups to share tips and advice, as well as access expert-led resources across pregnancy, postpartum, baby sleep, feeding, development and the early years," the expert shared.

Follow up

If you've met a mum with a child of the same age and you had a great time chatting, offer to swap numbers and set up a playdate!

"It can feel daunting, but the other mum is more than likely feeling the same so suggest swapping numbers and follow up to organise a playdate," she continued.

Take your little one to the park

If baby groups aren't for you, taking your little one to the local parks a few times a week is a great way to meet other mums who live close by!

"Generally, other mums are open to chatting and looking to make friends too, as well as your child interacting with other little ones and burning off some energy, too! It's a win-win!" the expert noted.

Attend post-natal fitness classes

Post-natal fitness classes are a great way to meet other mums, whilst doing something for yourself.

"The other mums in the room will most likely be similar in wanting to make mum friends as they may have attended the class to start chatting to other mums, so say 'hi' and take it from there," Holly shared.

Get out and about

We all know that getting out of the house can make us feel a little bit better.

"You never know who you will bump into in the local cafe, and it could be another mum wanting to make a friend just like you!" she smiled. "The local library is often filled with other mums browsing for books for their child, so it's a great way of meeting new mums who live near you. Some libraries also offer baby rhyme time which is a great chance to attend a free class that both you and your baby will enjoy."
