Simon Gregson signs up for I'm a Celebrity - report

Coronation Street star Simon Gregson has reportedly signed up for this year's I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here!

The actor, who has played Steve McDonald in the ITV soap since 1989, is reportedly following in the footsteps of his onscreen mum Beverley Callard, who appeared in the 2020 edition.

According to The Sun, Gregson will be going head-to-head with another long-running soap star - EastEnders' Adam Woodyatt, who plays Ian Beale.

"To have both Simon and Adam on this series is a real coup. Bosses think they'll provide some real comedy moments together," a source told the newspaper.

"Everyone knows Simon as Steve but now they'll get to see a completely different side of him for the first time. Simon has previously shunned all reality shows and he has turned down I'm A Celeb a number of times before. But now his children are older, Simon started to think the timing was right. And after the show was moved from Australia to Wales it made it easier for him to commit."

Responding to the rumours, a spokesman for the show said, "We do not comment on speculation."

Like last year, the 2021 show, presented by Ant and Dec, will once again be filmed at Gwrych Castle in Wales instead of the Australian jungle due to Covid-19 restrictions.

Other rumoured celebrity contestants include former Strictly Come Dancing judge Arlene Phillips and TV presenter Richard Madeley.

Madeley seemingly confirmed his participation in the show when he was asked about the rumours on Good Morning Britain earlier this week.

"I'm asked this every year and I usually give an equivocal reply. And I've checked with ITV what they want me to say about it because I may be going in and I may not be going in," he teased.
