As Brigid Kosgei crossed the line of the elite-only London Marathon this morning, many eagled-eyed runners will have been looking at her feet, wondering what shoes she opted to wear for the rainy race.

Both Kosgei and fellow Kenyan Ruth Chepngetich opted to wear the Nike Air Zoom Alphafly NEXT% - the controversial shoes Kipchoge made headlines with when he ran a sub-2 marathon in Vienna last October.

Speaking at the Virgin Money London Marathon press conference earlier in the week, Kosgei defended her choice, saying it is the runner, not the shoes that makes a difference.

'You know the shoes could not run. It is someone who can run, it's not the shoes, it does not depend on the shoes.

'If I use the training shoes and the body is not there, you cannot run good. So for me it's just the body which enables me to run good, it is not the shoes' said Kosgei.

The shoes narrowly avoided a World Athletics ban, and according to Nike, have been ‘engineered to the specifications of world-class runners as they challenge records and move the needle of human potential forward’. Here's what they are like to run in.
