Shikellamy students get out of the classroom for Fun Fair Day

May 18—SUNBURY — Shikellamy High School students put away the pens and paper and got the chance to go outside and enjoy the annual end-of-the-year Fun Fair Day on Friday.

The event, organized by teacher Jodi Schmidt, entered its fifth year as part of the 7 Mindsets program, brought to the district by former Shikellamy Assistant Superintendent Mary Murphy-Kahn.

Murphy-Kahn ran the successful program in the district and made sure students enjoyed themselves while learning.

The 7 Mindsets program is designed to promote self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills and responsible decision-making.

Part of the program is the year-end Fun Fair Day where students get a card to be used at various games and events and they pay small amounts of money to raise funds for other various programs inside the district.

"This is a fun day for everyone," Schmidt said. "This is a great end-of-the-year event for students."

Ninth-grade student Mandy Klock, 15, agreed.

"It's fun to get outside and walk around," she said.

Kaleb O'Conner, 16, a 10th-grade student, said he also was enjoying the day.

"This breaks up being in school all day," he said. 'It's fun to be outside with my friends playing games."

Junior class President Logan Wiest said he also was enjoying being out of the classroom.

"It's nice to see all the students outside having fun," he said.

High School Principal Marc Freeman said the event put students in a good mood.

"They get to go outside and enjoy the games and raise money for other programs in the district," he said. "This is one of those days all the students look forward to having and it shows with so many of them enjoying being here."
