Shenango Valley Meals on Wheels has new home, new manager
May 16—HERMITAGE — Shenango Valley Meals on Wheels has motored over to a new home and picked up a new manager on the way.
Meals on Wheels new Program Coordinator Mavis Shannon was busy this week working in the non-profit organization's new base at MCAR at 900 N. Hermitage Road in Hermitage.
The move was completed in April. The organization had been at Christ Lutheran Church in Sharon for more than half a century since its founding in 1970.
Shannon isn't new to the world of food.
"I do the food pantry at Valley Baptist Church in Farrell," she said.
Meals on Wheels had been paying rent at the church, but MCAR had an unused kitchen and is letting the group use it rent-free.
"It's a wonderful collaboration," Shannon said.
Some days MCAR's clients serve as meal packers, which is another benefit, she added.
MCAR is a non-profit that provides advocacy and comprehensive support to adults with disabilities.
Serving meals to around 50 of its own clients for $10 a person per day, Meals on Wheels relies on donations on top of the price of meals. The price includes a hot meal, soup and a second, bagged cold meal. Meals are delivered at lunchtime.
"We don't get any federal or state money," Shannon said. "And with our volunteers we deliver meals for free."
The organization covers the Shenango Valley, including Brookfield and Masury, along with Greenville. Meals on Wheels delivers Monday through Friday with extra weekend meals delivered on Friday if requested. But any day or combination of days are offered.
"And our meals are home-made," Shannon said.
There are no age or income requirements to become a client.
"We always need volunteers to help with cooking, packing and delivering," Shannon said.
