Ahead is a recap of Williams’ most notable fashion looks throughout the years in anticipation of her becoming the first athlete to receive the CFDA honor.
2003
Williams wore a gown she designed herself called “Aneres” (her name spelled backward) to the 2003 ESPY Awards. The dress featured a plunging neckline, high slits and a silver shimmering waistband detail. That year, the star athlete took home both the Best Female Athlete and the Best Female Tennis Player Award.
2008
Williams donned a white minidress with black lace details. Even her hair stuck to the vintage theme, in tight, short curls that framed her face.
2015
For the 2015 Wimbledon Champions Dinner, Williams wore a blush pink gown with a crystal-embellished front. That year, the star, whose gown also included a sheer-like side train, won her sixth Wimbledon title and her 21st major title overall.
2018
Williams and her tech-savvy husband, Alexis Ohanian, showcased their regal style while attending Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding in 2018. Williams, who is close friends with Markle, wore a Versace midi dress with Bulgari jewelry. When it came to hair, the athlete made a powerful statement with a waist-length braided ponytail and a chic fascinator.
2023
Williams and Ohanian arrived in sharp ensembles at the 2023 Met Gala, where the theme was “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty.” Williams’ tulle-adorned Gucci gown (with Tiffany and Co. jewelry) aligned with the black-and-white color palette of the late designer and showcased her growing baby bump, serving as the announcement of her second child.
