'Self-Care For Me Is About Unplugging': Emma Roberts On Motherhood And The Power Of A Digital Detox
Between filming for her new thriller, 'Fourth Wall', sitting front row during Haute Couture fashion week, getting engaged and entering motherhood, you'd be forgiven for thinking that Emma Roberts had very little in the way of downtime. But for the actor, mother and singer, prioritising self-care and wellbeing have become even more paramount the busier, and more frenetic, her schedule has become.
Whether it's switching off the from the outside noise and 'unplugging' or, as she tells us, prioritising a life outside of work, below the multi-hyphenate and Kiko Milano ambassador outlines her wellness, make-up and beauty routine – plus, her favourite book club reads...
On prioritising self-care as a mother...
'Self-care for me is about unplugging from electronics. I love to do bath and bed routines with my son and then take some time for myself. That usually involves a face mask and a book. Last summer I couldn’t put down our June @belletrist book club pick: The Friday Afternoon Club by Griffin Dunne.'

On her evolving make-up bag...
'I’m always trying to get my essentials down but they’re ever-changing. I can never just bring a carry-on when I travel because my make-up and skincare take up too much room! I love trying new make-up and looks. Mascara has always been my favourite. My make-up definitely changes depending on my mood! I usually choose to accentuate either the eye or lip. Both, and I feel overdone!'
On the fast track to better skin health...
'Nothing can top good sleep and hydration!'
On keeping her feet on the ground in the industry...
'I think it’s really important to have a life outside of work — to read things and have experiences that aren’t work related. I think this actually makes the work better when you pick it back up again. I really try to give my personal life as much love as my work life. As someone in the industry, I think it’s easy to self-isolate for the sake of a job, but losing touch with the real world is where you get yourself in trouble.'
On the make-up tips she's learned on set...
'I recently learned to contour but I’m not very good at it... First and foremost, skincare has always been more important to me over make-up. If your skin isn’t well taken care of, make-up doesn’t look right. I always follow my nighttime routine, even if I get home late too. Sometimes we would film until 5AM, and I would still prioritise my skincare routine - I knew that I wokeup, I'd be glad I did.'
On the characters whose beauty routines she loves most...
'I feel like the make-up I’m into at any given time is reflected in my characters. I loved the red lip I wore on American Horror Story: Freak Show'.
