Selena Posts Clip of Writing Song About JustinTikTok/Selena Gomez

Selena Gomez is looking back at a painful moment in her life—her split from longtime love Justin Bieber—that ultimately led her to truly get to know herself.

On TikTok yesterday, the pop star shared a rare, intimate throwback clip of herself writing “Lose You to Love Me.” The emotional track tells the story of her and Bieber’s heartbreaking separation, followed by his quick marriage to Hailey Baldwin (now Bieber), and Gomez’s metaphorical rebirth.

In the raw video, Gomez is seen sitting on her piano, makeup-free and in casual clothes, singing from her heart—making up the lyrics and the melody as she goes.

“This isnt the greatest i know so i hope no one minds me turning the comments off for my head but this was the best, most sincere moments with lose you to love me,” she wrote in the post caption.

Gomez and Bieber dated on and off from 2010 to 2018. A few months after their split in 2018, the “Sorry” singer moved on with Baldwin, marrying her that September. In October 2019, Gomez released “Lose You to Love Me” as the lead single from her third studio album, Rare. Gomez has said before that the track is her favorite of all the songs she’s written.

She told Billboard in 2020: “When I wrote the song ‘Lose You to Love Me,’ I was kind of a mess. It was really difficult for me. And by the time we shot the music video at the end of the year, it had a completely different meaning, and it was so freeing. It was actually fun for me—I think, because I let it go, it actually meant that I let it go within myself as well. And I couldn’t have asked for a better way to close a chapter in my life.”

Gomez has addressed her split from Bieber in the years since, but now mostly stays out of the spotlight and away from the drama. Earlier this year, she famously asked fans to stop bullying her ex’s wife, and the two women publicly made their peace.
