Secret superfood in fry-ups is better for you than most breakfasts, experts say

While we all love a traditional fry-up of bacon, sausage, eggs and beans, it's easy to feel like treating ourselves to a proper cooked breakfast complete with black pudding and tattie scones is "unhealthy".

But experts have revealed that a traditional fry-up could actually be healthier than other breakfast options like granola and fruity yoghurt. According to the latest research, a classic cooked breakfast is packed with protein, vitamins, and nutrients, which keeps you fuller for longer and can even boost your brain health, reports Surrey Live.

However, popular "healthy" and "low-fat" breakfast bars are often full of sugar, corn syrup, and fruit juice concentrate. These quick-digesting carbs offer a temporary energy spike in the morning, but may lead to a drop in your energy levels later, causing you to crave unhealthy snacks.

The new study revealed that cooked breakfasts include complex carbohydrates and beneficial fats that can keep our bodies fuelled throughout the day. And a well-balanced fry-up may only contain around 600 calories, a fraction of the recommended daily calorie intake for adults.

However, some of the best-selling fruit and yoghurt bars contain up to 220 calories each, meaning eating just three could surpass the calorie count of a hearty serving of eggs, bacon, and sausage, reports the Daily Star.

The report, compiled by Catered Ski Chalet Holidays | Ski Vertigo, warned consumers of the high sugars and simple carbohydrates that are found in cereal bars which are deceptively marketed as "healthy".

The report said: "To fuel your body properly, the key is balancing macronutrients - protein, healthy fats and complex carbohydrates.

"A breakfast rich in these nutrients stabilises your blood sugar and keeps you full longer."

A balanced cooked breakfast promotes lasting energy and contributes positively to weight management and cognitive functions.

The report continued: "Experts at Ski Vertigo, who specialise in providing balanced, nourishing meals at their full-service chalets, warn that a seemingly innocent choice could be a recipe for disaster, affecting energy, digestion and even long-term wellness.

"Think granola bars, fruit-flavoured yoghurts and even some cereals boasting 'low-fat' or 'organic' labels. While these options might seem like smart choices, they can lead to a quick spike in blood sugar followed by an inevitable crash.

"This rollercoaster not only leaves you feeling sluggish but also primes your body for cravings and over-eating later in the day."

Guise Bule de Missenden, chairman of the English Breakfast Society, said: "We have long advocated for the nutritional merits of the traditional English breakfast.

"A well-prepared English breakfast provides anyone who needs real energy to sustain them throughout the day with healthy fats and complex carbohydrates, contributing to sustained energy release and satiety.

"Assuming unprocessed quality British ingredients are the core components, the English breakfast can be quite healthy when eaten in moderation."
