Scotland braces for 24-hour snow fall as new weather warning brings more disruption

Parts of Scotland are bracing for up to 10cm of snow, with the Met Office issuing yet another weather alert. The north of Scotland will be placed under a 24 hour yellow weather warning for snow and ice from Tuesday.

The next instalment of wintry weather will hit and be confined to northern and north-eastern parts of the country. The warning will come into effect at 12pm on Tuesday, January 7 and last until 12pm, Wednesday, January 8.

Scots in these impacted areas will experience sleet and snow showers which will result in 2-5cm of the white stuff landing in some places and 5-10cm accumulating in spots above 200 metres across northern Scotland.

Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist, Mike Silverstone, explained: “There is a chance of a further spell of rain, sleet and snow moving in from the southwest on Wednesday to affect some southern parts of the UK.”

“Whilst not all those in the warning area may be affected, it is possible that that 2-5 cm of snow may accumulate fairly widely. Whether this system will brush the south of the UK or miss us altogether still remains a little uncertain, but we’ll continue to assess this over the next day or two.

"Weather warnings may well be updated, so it’s important people stay up to date with the forecast.”

Icy stretches are likely on untreated surfaces, meaning folks should be vigilant when travelling on both foot, bike, and vehicle. People should refrain from rushing so as to avoid accidents like bad falls and slips.

It comes after Scotland suffered the coldest night of the winter on Sunday, with temperatures dipping to a spine-tingling minus 13.3C at Loch Glasgarnoch in the Highlands, according to Met Office data.

A number of Scots schools will remain closed today amidst another blast of wintry weather and ScotRail has issued a warning to passengers to check their journey before setting off as "delays and alterations may occur".

The cold snap also wreaked havoc on flights from Aberdeen Airport yesterday, with flights either delayed or cancelled. Airline companies were unable to de-ice planes forcing flights to be re-routed through Edinburgh.

There is one more weather warning in place for the same areas as this one, but will expire at 12pm on Tuesday after being introduced at 4pm yesterday.
