Forget spending hours contouring/strobing/whatever in the quest to look more attractive to the opposite sex, because science has determined that there’s a far easier (and cheaper!) way for us to up the alluring ante.

It turns out that our appeal has less to do with how we look, and more to do with how well we show our emotions. Wait, what?

Yep, researchers from the University of Tübingen in Germany carried out an experiment which involved showing subjects pictures of women pretending either to be scared or sad. The scientists then asked the participants to guess how the women were feeling, and found that when the men felt certain about a woman’s emotion, it 'lit up' the brain’s ‘pleasure circuits’. Or to put it more bluntly, they were more attracted to the women they could read.

So, if you want to up your attractive game forget about offering an air of mystery and get working on wearing your heart on your sleeve.

The idea is certainly going to take some getting used to, particularly as many of us are so well practiced at keeping our feelings hidden. Him: ‘What’s wrong?’ You: ‘Nothing, I’m fine’ when really you’re seething. Sound familiar?

“Humans interacting with other humans must be able to understand their interaction partner’s affect and motivations, often without words,” said the study’s authors.

“We asked participants to watch different persons experiencing different emotions. We found the better a participant thought they could understand another person’s emotion the more they felt attracted toward that person.”

And while we’re on the whole ‘attractiveness’ thing, another group of researchers have revealed that the most attractive feature in a woman’s face is how sparse it is.

Science you’re going to have to elaborate a little on this one. Researchers from the National Centre for Scientific Research in Paris asked a group of participants what they thought of random women’s faces and strangely uncovered a preference for more sparse faces??

Ok so, “I really fancy that Gigi Hadid, she’s got such a sparse face” is not something we’re used to hearing. But what the team took the results to mean was that men showed a preference for a simpler face.

Giving a better description of ‘sparse face’ to Medical Daily, Dr Julien Renoult, who led the study explained: “A sparse face is a face that is efficiently encoded in the brain — that is, using only a few neurons. In other words, they are easy to process in the brain,” he said. “Sparse faces typically are simple, with a smooth skin texture, few wrinkles and smooth contour lines.”

And we’re back to the contouring again. Doh!
